The Decline of the NFL – IOTW Report

The Decline of the NFL

American Thinker: Twenty eighteen marks the third straight year that NFL Super Bowl viewing declined.  While many media outlets blame the downturn on Colin Kaepernick and the player protests started in 2016, in reality, the protests could be only one of many reasons why Americans are choosing to shut off the television and not watch the Super Bowl.

It’s possible that the NFL has miscalculated its viewership because it has ill estimated what it is selling.  The NFL is a league of the best football competition in the world, and the Super Bowl is the last game of the season between the two best teams in the league.  That should be enough to draw a massive audience, and yet it’s not anymore.  Why not?

In 2015, almost 115 million Americans tuned in to watch the Super Bowl.  This gigantic demographic – over one third of the total population of the United States – must have no doubt included the very old, the very young, the very rich, the very poor, the very beautiful, the not so beautiful, the teetotalers, the raging alcoholics, and everything in between.  And yet to watch the halftime show, one would think the NFL’s only viewers are liberal twenty-somethings from California, with no family responsibilities and an interest in making an epic sweep in the here and now. more here

  2. I’ve said it before, I think the real measure of how NFL is doing will be season ticket sales this year. Last year the attendance was basically the same as prior years, not because all the seats were filled – they weren’t – but because about the same number of season tickets were purchased and it’s the ticket sale that counts as attendance.

  4. The decline of the NFL is directly related to the cultural decline of US blacks. I can’t think of a single interaction with a black stranger I’ve met in the last five years that hasn’t been tainted by their utter rudeness and hatred of whites. Just this past weekend, my wife and I were waiting in a coffee shop while waiting for a ferry, and we pass a guy sitting in a lounge chair waiting around. I said, “Good morning… How are you?”… The guy just looks away and say, “Don’t like being around all these white people.” It was just so fucking rude. What an asshole. I’ve had similar conversations over the past years where I just casually say hello to someone at work or on the street, and the only ones who respond with flat out rudeness are blacks. They really have become the Klan with a Tan. Fuck them. They ruined the NFL with their mindless race hate, plain and simple.

  5. If they want to go balls to the wall ghetto-centric that’s their business, but I’m not having any part of it. It’s bad enough that my home town has become a place too dangerous to go to after dark. When I absolutely have to, I’m heavily armed and ready to protect myself.

  6. “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” so the old adage says.

If you want to understand why the NFL leadership does what it does, just look up Roger Goodell’s leftist/commie/politician father.

  7. Football junkie (50+years) here.
The idiotic behavior after a sack, a block, a touchdown.
The no-name players who come and go from team to team.
The constant commercial breaks, the flying yellow flags.
The strange offenses that defy explanation.
    The insulting kneeling.
Something that never gets mentioned, but made the game more exciting – playing in the rain, the snow, the fog. The sun shining in the faces of the players.
I like college football better than the NFL.
