There’s a trend sweeping social media and some offices where employees are quitting “the idea of going above and beyond at work,” as TikTok user @zaidleppelin said in July. That post has gotten more than 3 million posts and helped to popularize the term “quiet quitting.”

Employment specialists say that quiet quitting is just a new term for an old concept: employee disengagement. It comes on the heels of the “Great Resignation” that occurred after the re-opening of the economy that was shuttered by the pandemic. There are many offices that never got back to full strength because of so many people moving on — 4 million a month at the height of it — and this has led to high rates of burnout from those who stayed behind.

  1. It’s not quiet quitting, it’s the sovietization of a workplace. They pretend to pay, we pretend to work. You’d be amazed how productive you appear generating emails and meetings to discuss how unproductive the workplace is and having to have a meeting to follow up on the lack of production before you can go do your actual work. Oh look, day is over catch y’all tomorrow. It’s really just a lot of dead weight people trying to protect their phoney jobs. Real productivity doesn’t require meetings or mandatory feel good training.

  4. The incentive to work is directly proportional to the “value” placed on said work. I.E. You pay shit, you get shit workers. Now we have 1/2 a generation that see the other 1/2 as leeches, paid with their work stolen from them through taxation in it’s myriad of forms. It’s no wonder the system is breaking down, the engine can’t run if the government’s got a siphon in the tank and free enterprise has to buy gas from the government.

  5. Aaaaaaaaaand THIS is why the Chinese can’t conceptually compete with any free economy. No carrot. And we are headed down that path. It’s a direct result of the socialist bull shit that’s invading the hi tech businesses. No more little pink houses with white picket fences. Just a tiny home. Painted grey inside and out. You will own nothing and be happy about it.

  6. This happened at the place I worked – maybe 15-20 years ago our division had a cash bonus based on how well they did. We started doing VERY well, and the bonus increased dramatically. That’s when the corporate CEO decided our division wouldn’t receive a bonus anymore, but gave himself a cash bonus of $17 million that year. After that nobody would do anything that wasn’t specifically in their job description. No favors, no above and beyond. The division CEO ended up giving everyone a $3k a year raise.

  7. This was going on before Covid. Millennials and post-millennials just don’t want to work. They can’t be depended on to show up on time or even show up at all. No work ethic. This of course is a generalization, and there are exceptions.

    Biden raised unemployment 20% and makes it easier to make more money not working or hardly working.
    It is, as others have pointed out, sovietization. It’s why Communist and Socialist countries go backwards instead of forward. No more working until the job is done.

  9. At a job I had, the least productive person there got promoted to manager and began managing us programmers. He didn’t have a clue what code was. When word came down he needed to trim some staff he basically threw darts at a board for layoffs, totally oblivious who was more capable. Those of us that remained started minimizing our work to make him look bad. It didn’t work, he got promoted, again, to director. FFS. I still loathe that asshat to this day, he walked away with millions.

  10. American corporate boardrooms are almost as fucked-up as our politicians and our social philosophy. I claim “almost” because there still are companies who set their own standards, build the best products and refuse to “survive” by trying to control our Congress who, thanks to 100+ years of Communist teaching in our public schools, thinks its primary role in this society is micro-managing all businesses with laws written by industry lobbyists, i.e., political hacks.

    We are COMPLETELY – UTTERLY – TOTALLY – down the wrong path from our founding and deserve the economic self-destruction that’s coming.

  11. So many examples of corporate behavior that are incentive killers. One – a single gal came to work where I did…got married to someone up the food chain and received a promotion…got divorced and married someone higher yet and got another promotion….and happened again a third time where she got promoted to team manager. During a big project she would brag about the progress being made by her team – she was mandating extreme overtime work, and got good progress…until the entire team quit the company.
    A different company – I had to give the manager advance notice if I was leaving the building for lunch break….on the shuttle bus taking employees to downtown restaurants for lunch. Decided it was time to retire.
    @ecp – was that person the CEO’s idiot nephew? Saw way too much of that.

  14. I am assuming “quiet quitting” refers to actually putting in your 8 hours and then going home instead of just slacking off on the job. So…what’s wrong with that? That is the agreement the employer made with you – for 8 hours of work, we will pay you “x” number of dollars.

    Ah, you say, if I put in the extra hours I will be rewarded with pay raises and promotions. Maybe you will, maybe you won’t. Actually, probably you won’t. To most companies, everyone is replaceable – and I worked for one firm that expressly stated that in case we were not clear on that concept. Employers like to state that they expect employee loyalty, but fail to state that loyalty to them is not a two way street – at the first sign of trouble, you’re gone.

    I find nothing wrong with having interests other than work. No will speak at a eulogy and say “Ed had four wives, 6 dysfunctional children, and absolutely no outside interests or hobbies, but boy could he put in 80 hour weeks with no vacations year in and year out.” I work in a field where being a workaholic is considered a good thing; but a lot of my colleagues have drug and alcohol dependence problems, depression and substantial health problems not to mention kids who basically grew up without a father, and several of my colleagues died young.

    Finally, I admire entrepreneurs and do not envy them any success. Maybe my efforts were a part of their success, but the business owners were the ones who took the risk, many of them fail, almost all of them put in inordinate amounts of time, effort and money, and if at the end of the day they are financially able to drive home to nice digs in a luxury automobile, then good for them. The laws in every state require that business owners pay their employees before they pay themselves, as a employee I really have no risk should the business fail, and really no right to any “reward” for any success of the venture.

    I sit at my desk wondering why I work 10-12 hours for an 8 hour a day job for little above minimum wage. Oh yea…., I have to eat

Not trying to plug but there’s a professor with the Wide World of History that presents a weekly lecture with an open q&a after that will be discussing the Rise of management and the change from helpful leaders to tyrants this week. It is free and happens in a zoom call. He is a very informative person, retired historian that is a conservative patriot. Last week the topic was Joe McCarthy. It happens on Wednesday evening. Not a plug but kinda timely and relative to this topic. They destroyed small businesses with the lockdown and regulation overreach. My experience with giant companies vs. small businesses was that only small company people had to perform and not always act like a cult member. Unless related to the owners. I think it’s been at least one or two generations of people that don’t know how to enjoy work. People snitching, runaway HR hacks, backstabbing, idea stealing, political correctness, elitism, h1b visas, outsourcing. Email and that lame instant messaging really helped the decline. What did the clowns expect. They pad their resumes and go destroy the next stop before the fallout.

  19. I think this is the fallout of cultural characteristics of mega-corporate culture that basically disconnects productivity from rewards. Hell, you can bust your ass at a job and be the top producer by far, and be the first one laid off because you’re white, male, or old. Most top management these days are rich kid fucktards who wouldn’t know what real work was if it kicked them in the face with a hobnail boot.

  23. I am the top “producer” at my office. Odd designation as a hospice nurse but I have the most referrals from my facilities, highest family satisfaction scores, highest number of weekly visits/ productivity points.

    We are also paid salary.

    Imagine my chagrin when I discover I have coworkers who deliver less than half of what I do and make the same salary as I do. When they brag about working 20 hours a week, home by noon most days. Yet we have additional visit nurses to cover gaps in the schedule that literally shouldn’t exist if those half-day people had any shred of integrity. Oh, and we got <2% raises this year.

    So I notified my supervisor that the "above and beyond" ends today. When my coworkers get in a bind, they can call someone else to bail them out. The sad part is, it's always phrased that a patient and their family are in a bind, because we always want to help. Yes, I'm sure they are. I'm no longing coming to the rescue when we have plenty of staff half-assing it.
