The Real Reason Johnny Can’t Read: Bad Parenting

PJM

It’s not often that I agree with education analyst Diane Ravitch, who is rabidly anti-school choice and anti-religious, but she’s right to call out the latest government boondoggle that’s supposed to magically teach kids to read. She opined last month:

There is no “science of reading.” There is no “science of teaching math” or any other academic skill or study. If someone can identify a district where every single student reads at a proficient level on state tests, I will change my view. I await the evidence.

Like No Child Left Behind and Common Core before it, the “Science of Reading” is just another excuse to line the coffers of education bureaucrats and textbook publishers.  more

  1. Yes, kids should learn at home. But too many parents abandon their responsibility thinking “others” will take care of it. Well, guess what? You abandon your kids to the State and the State is too willing to step in and show you how to really snarl things up.

Lazy-ass parents: you breed ’em, then you feed ’em, and raise ’em. Stop turning to Uncle Sugar to underwrite your insouciant lifestyle.

  2. I am extremely literate because my mom and my second-grade teacher Mrs. Benham took the extra time to teach me how to read and write phonetically. My first-grade teacher thought that I was slow and retarded because the look/say Dick and Jane malarkey was hard for me to comprehend. Phonetics rules, Dick and Jane is for fools. And by the time I was in 3rd or 4th grade I could out read everybody else with a few exceptions and constantly had my nose in a book and particularly history books of all kinds. And I still read an average of one to two books a week particularly now since I found a very good used bookstore near my house where I can buy books rather inexpensively. I just read the second volume of William Manchester’s American history book The Glory and The Dream with 1932-1972 with emphasis on the 50’s thru the early 70’s, my generation and learned more of what I forgot about growing up then and coming of age in the early 70’s. I have always been a written word person, a bookworm of all kinds of books and would rather read a good book than anything else.

  3. Sure, Captain Obvious, we all know that not everyone has the same capacity to learn. The problem is that in many public school districts, none of the kids can read.is it the teachers/system, or the “demographics “?

  5. My Mom was an English teacher and the reason I am pretty adept at the English language. If I didn’t use the proper grammer, I hoid about! Parents used to work with their kids and their homework EVERY night! We worked with our children every night as well and we still communicate with them almost on a daily basis. Now however, schools (for the past 30 – 50 years) are for baby-sitting and feeding YOUR kids which has resulted in a generation (or two) of degreed, dumbed-down, self-absorbed, spoon-fed, celebrity-obsessed, White guilt-ridden, Birkenstock-wearing, bottled-water-drinking, kumbaya-singing, Xanax-disabled, Rainbow Plantation, COEXIST bumper-sticker, Liberal “victims” wandering around in a haze of Political Correctness and Liberal Lies, while the unemployed, dope-smoking, self-absorbed, media-influenced, celebrity-obsessed, Food-Stamp wielding, Escalade driving, Kool-Aid drinking, government-dependent, entitlement rich, busted-azz, free-loading, uninformed, short attention span, Obamaphone-carrying door-knobs can´t process a sound bite over 10 seconds in length that doesn´t rhyme and of course just don´t care! Welcome to Bidenville where the Truth doesn´t exist and the lies just keep on coming!

It’s like these idiots are looking in a mirror accusing us of what they’ve been doing since the day they started the KKK. It’s freaken amazing. Project, project, project. I had a Libtard try and tell me the other day the Republicans actually started the KKK and the reason why is in the 1920 the Democrats and Republicans switched party names. WTF over?

  8. Trolls are going to be on here hot and heavy today. It’s fathers day and most of them don’t know the dude. SO nothing to do all day long. Except get on line and confirm how stupid they are.

  9. We had a “Little Johnny” and a “Big Johnny” across the street. Little Johnny was malnourished, not very bright, lagging in school, but otherwise a good little boy. Big Johnny was well-fed, pretty bright, doing fairly well in school, but otherwise was a spoiled SNOT. I’ll take Little Johnny.

(Sorry, this is neither here nor there. But you really don’t expect the majority of our politically-run public schools to know how to teach ANYTHING now, do you?)

  11. The first word I learned to read was LOOK, I thought the “O’s” looked like eyes. I was disappointed when the rest of the words didn’t work like that. My education was all downhill after that :/
