Hillsdale College:
For Sir Winston Churchill, the key question throughout his life as a statesman was “What is the best way for men to live?” For him, the answer partly consisted of individual liberty: people living their lives under law as they saw fit. This, in turn, required representative government, liberal democracy, and individual rights to allow this ideal to flourish. But Churchill perceived threats looming on the horizon that sought to undermine that order: threats that required elevating some to have overwhelming power over the many. In the fourth lecture of our free online course, “Winston Churchill and Statesmanship,” Larry Arnn identifies what problems Churchill perceived in the politics of his day and how they are still relevant to our own.
Churchill pointed out that, with the rise of science, an emerging trend he coined as “mass effects” had taken shape. This phenomenon saw a growing number of Britons become part of larger, more organized institutions. The employees of these institutions received more comfort and stability in the form of a steady wage, which Churchill thought was beneficial. But he disliked how this employment structure reduced individual human greatness and achievement. more
Wasn’t long after the war the British government basically treated him like crap and put him out to pasture.
