  1. The government is my shepherd; It supplies me with everything it deems that I need.
    The government controls the green pastures; This is done for me.
    The EPA controls the waters; I shall not touch them.

  2. 2115:
    President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, porn star and five-time ultimate smackdown wrestling champion!!!!
    A great man, a great american.
    He will serve up a can of whoop ass if you cross him.

  3. The 2008 mind-numbingly stupid, unaccomplished, arrogant, free-stuff-grabbing Liberal version:
    Obama is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down with Barney Frank. He leadeth me toward still voting booths. He restoreth my welfare. He leadeth me down the path of food stamps for his name’ sake.
 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Nancy Pelosi, I will fear no evil, for thy Occupy Squatters art with me.
 Thy paid programming propaganda comforts me. Thou annointest my head with bullsh*t.
 Forgive us for our emissions, lead us not into prosperity and deliver us from climate change denial. Surely more entitlement programs and government intervention shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the Democratic Peoples Republic forever and ever.

  4. Obama is my shepherd; I shall not work.
    He keepth jobs out of the hands of the people,
    Which leadeth the country to class warfare and polarization.
    He encourageth sloth; he leadeth the government to new heights in deficit spending.
    Yea, though I walk in the shadow of Economic collapse,
    I shall fear no depression: for Obama is with me.
    His handouts and monetary indiscretion supplement my income.
    He maintainest spending increases in the presence of insurmountable debt;
    He punisheth businesses with excessive regulations;
    And giveth the hard-earned fruits of labor to the unproductive.
    Surely, handouts and stimulus payments shall follow all the days of his administration;
    And I will stay unemployed forever.

  5. I’m okay with different interpretations as long as they are reasonably close to the original. And King James wasn’t necessarily close to the original, the flowery language is beautiful but it doubt that it tracks back particularly faithfully to David’s original words. Ultimately it comes down to upbringing – I’ll read the modern versions but contrast to older versions (usually RSV in my case).

  6. It’s also fun it you read it in the right to left Hebrew version.

    The Stone Edition Tanach translates:

    Hashem is my shepherd. I shall not lack. In hush meadows He lays me down, beside tranquil waters He leads me. He restores my soul. He leads me on paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake. Though I walk in the valley overshadowed by death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and Your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in view of my tormentors. You anointed my head with oil, my cup overflows. May only goodness and kindness pursue me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the House of Hashem for long days.

    (I sort of like the “hush meadows” part)

  7. The evolution of religion from a historical perspective is fascinating.It is inextricably mixed with politics.

    Note the displacement of pagamism by Christianity as a State religion, the schism between Eastern and Western Churches. The rise of Islam and it’s effects on the West. The Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Counter Reformation all were factors in political evolution and the advent of nationalism. Also in the mix were economic concerns- the slow death of Feudalism and the growth of the increasingly powerful middle class.

    Some of the big players were Diocletian, Constantine, Luther, Henry VIII as well as various Popes and potentates and philosophers,
