  1. In junior high, one of our friends was hit by a car and he sustained grave life-altering injuries, including brain damage. After he survived the gruesome recovery and he was able to get around in a wheelchair, a group of us guys took him everywhere we went to do what boys do. We’d strap life jackets on him and go canoeing and skinny-dipping in the creek under the highway bridge. We’d drag him into the oilfields to explore by pulling him in a wagon we built especially for him. He got away from us one time and he rolled down the bank of a creek and through blackberry bushes filled with stickers. He screamed all the way down, but when we got to him and he looked up at us, we all began to laugh, and we kept it up until we were exhausted. We tried to give him the best time we could possibly give him and he appreciated it. I’ll never forget.
