Time to End the Clock-Changing Madness

American Thinker:

By Jeff Crouere

The dreaded time has come for Americans to lose one hour of sleep as we “spring forward” to daylight saving time (DST) and move forward our clocks.  This adds another nuisance, as it is already difficult for Americans to sleep enough with the constant stress of COVID-19, economic woes, and societal unrest throughout the country.

One easy way to improve our sleep is to end this ridiculous ritual, which creates needless headaches and causes the unnecessary aggravation of changing our clocks twice a year.  It may have been a good idea when it was implemented in 1918; however, over one century later, it has lost its usefulness.

In November, it will be time to “fall back” an hour to standard time.  All this clock-changing leads to increased accidents, a higher incidence of heart attacks, a loss of productivity, and pointless confusion for the American people.

Fifteen states have enacted laws to adopt DST throughout the year.  In 2018, 62% of California voters voted to make DST permanent year-round.  Unfortunately, their state Legislature has not approved a measure.  This highlights a familiar problem: just because voters want something to happen, that does mean that politicians will act.

None of the state laws can be implemented until triggered by federal legislation.  Fortunately, there is finally some hope there will be action by Congress. A bipartisan group of eight U.S. senators have introduced the “Sunshine Protection Act of 2021.”  This legislation will end the twice-yearly clock-changing practices and make DST permanent. read more

  1. What’s with the frickin “madness”? I think it works fine the way it is. If it got changed, that’s OK too. I swear, if people didn’t have something to cry about they would invent something.

It goes down when it goes down.

In my simple mind there wasn’t much else to it. You start working when you can see, you stop working when you can’t see.

  3. Well my fav spying device goes off at 6:00 am tomorrow so I can get my ass to the gym. Which would normally be 7:00. I’m old a weak and generally sleep deprived anyway. This sucks. But, I’ll be there.

  4. Interesting factoid. You’ll need to research it on your own, but the hot mama on Fox And Friends this morning reported Day Light Savings time was passed by some Politician that wanted to escape his job duties an hour early so he could go dove hunting. Makes sense to me.

  5. I would love it.

But i have issues with the zoning. The time zones were created in about the time the transcontinental trains were needing to coordinate stuff, but they divided my state down the middle and it is damn inconvenient, even the capitol city is cut in half. i live in a state that the time zone bisects. The boundaries should run along state lines. I say move the dangnab lines and keep dst y/r.

  6. I like the shorter daylight working period in the winter when I do not want to be up on a roof freezing in the winter (HVAC tech) and the longer daylight in the summer where i can enjoy being outside with a beer.

Most devices now days auto correct for est/dst and frankly I love and collect real mechanical watches. (things of beauty)

  8. like I said yesterday, just do like the Romans did

6:00 AM is when the sun comes up … 12:00 midnight is when the sun goes down … the ultimate Daylight Savings Time

those Roman folk were logical beyond belief!

  9. Kcir, I’m a mechanical watch and clock fellow.

I went a long way to repairing them as well. I was one of the few who could remove a GG-W-113 crystal and crown without ever breaking anything.

Oh well. That seems a lifetime ago.

The sun comes up and the sun goes down
The hands on the clock keep a-goin’ ’round
I just get up and it’s time to lay down
Life gets tee-jus, don’t it, hmm.

My shoes untied but I don’t care
    I ain’t a-figurin’ on goin’ nowhere
For I’d have to wash and comb my hair
    And that’s just wasted effort.

The water in the well just gettin’ lower and lower
Can’t take a bath at six months more
But I’ve heared it said and it’s true, I’m sure
That to much bathin’ will, will weaken you.

I opened the door an’ the fly’s swarm in
Closed the door and I’m sweatin’ again
And in the pros… (a huchh) crack my shin
Just one darn thing after another.

Old brown mule he must be sick
I jambed him in the rump with a pin on a stick
He humped his back but he wouldn’t kick
    Now there’s something c***-eyed somewhere.

A mouse a-chewin’ on the pantry door
He’s been at it fer a month or more
When he gets through he’d sure be sore
‘Cause there ain’t a darned thing in there.

    Hound dog howlin’ so forlorn
Laziest dog that was ever born
    He’s a-howlin’ ’cause he’s a-settin’ on a thorn
An’ just to tired to move over.

The tin roof leaks and chimney leans
An’ there’s a hole in the seat of my old blue jeans
And I ett the last of the pork and beans
    Just can’t depend on nothin’.

Cow’s gone dry and the hens won’t lay
Fish quit bittin’ and it’s Saturday
Troubles are pilin’ up day by day
    And now I’m gettin’ dandruff.

Grief and misery, pains and woes
Debts and taxes, yea, so it goes
I think I’m gettin’ a cold in my nose
    Life get tee-just don’t it?…

  11. For several years I kept my computer stuff (both personal and business) set to UTC/GMT (Zulu time for us vets). I had family and friends in six time zones and I worked for a truly global company and was in frequent contact with geek colleagues in six continents (but no Antarctica office!). Even today, I’ve set my phone’s home screen to display both Miami and London times (I have to pick from their list of cities).

It would be too painful and disrupting for everyone to switch to UTC, but IMO once the change was made it sure would simplify an awful lot more things than it would complicate.

  12. American time for Americans.

None of this crazy Irish clock foolery.

Time starts at I and ends at XII. BECAUSE REAL AMERICAS USE ROMAN NUMERALS.

  13. It doesn’t bother me so much, but it would be nice to pick one and stick with it. I have to listen to my nephew bitch about it every 6 months, so it might be nice not to have to change the clocks.

  14. I was a senior in high school in California (the Bay Area) during the first energy crisis. Daylight. In January 1974 Daylight Savings Time was implemented across the country. People were shocked in my area when kids were going to school in the dark. I don’t think people are thinking about that. It is almost as if they think another hour of sunlight is magically crated.

After a year or two of morning darkness, people will be calling for an end to year-around DST.

GG-W-113 was iconic and practical & beautiful in its simplicity.

Currently, Hamilton (now Swiss owned) makes the Khaki field series in various sizes 38, 40, 42mm and variations that are clones/reissues/homages to the originals. I gave my 40mm olive dial to my son when he turned 16.

Very accurate, bomb proof, with crystal display backs so you can show the young ones what a real watch movement looks like without batteries.

Great if you don’t want to risk damaging the original. They were used in the movie “Pearl Harbor” 2001.

  17. GTA Toronto: Toronto’s GTA & surrounding is a massive area including rural farms etc.

Compiled data shows that morning car crashes remained the same when averaged out and weather/snow/ice/rain with no significant changes in MORNING travel.

In EVENING incidents actually went down due to increased visibility.

Take it for what it is worth and who the source is.

  18. Time zones were set based on degrees of longitude, 24 hours allocated across 360 degrees. The idea was, at the midpoint of each zone the timekeeper set the clock to noon at local apparent noon. People adjusted their schedules as desired to get the chores done and meet with others. It still works, so why complicate? Adapt, the sun won’t adapt to us. Even with our hyperaccurate atomic clocks.

  19. …I had to change 103 clocks yesterday, all of them used for USDA/FDA regulatory purposes, and most of them in recording appliances that require passwords and multiple levels of button pushing to get to, so yeah, I’d be all for not doing that any more…

    Truth.
