TN: Gov. Haslam’s Family-Owned Pilot Flying J Appears to Benefit from Gas Tax Increase He Pushed Through

Breitbart: Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam alienated conservative Republicans earlier this year when he pushed a 6 cents per gallon gas tax increase through the Tennessee General Assembly and signed the hike into law despite the state’s $1 billion surplus.

Conservative state legislators and activists charged that Haslam’s family-owned company, the national truck stop chain Pilot Flying J based in Knoxville, appears to be in a position to benefit financially from the 6 cents per gallon gas tax increase and 10 cents per gallon diesel tax increase championed by the governor that went into effect on July 1.

“As we fought against the $300 million Haslam fuel tax increase earlier this year there was really no explanation for his insistence on a tax increase while the state was sitting on a billion dollar surplus and another billion in new recurring revenue,” Andy Ogles, who recently resigned as Americans for Prosperity’s (AFP) Tennessee state director to run for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, tells Breitbart News in an exclusive interview.

“Nor did the governor’s administration ever refute the apparent financial benefits that his family business could potentially receive from that fuel tax increase,” he adds.  more

  1. Gee. An increase if fuel tax, just like that, and for no good reason. Yeah, I’d say something stinks.

FJ was good for their shower accommodations. Their food was so-so. It’s a successful model in that you know what you’re going to get (more or less – there’s one in Snowville UT that leaves a bit to be desired) and what you can expect.

    This is cronyism.

  2. He wants Corker’s seat. I would not be surprised if he nominated himself if Corkboy retired early. Saves a primary race dontcha know? Thoughtful benign, liberal tyrant that he is.

It’s happened 9 times before but 90% of those doing it had their balls put in the bandsaw by the voters first chance they got.

  3. The TN GOPe is a mirror of the establishment. They talk conservative in a primary but once they get in it’s all wishy washy.

TN went 70% for Trump. The establishment will run their own candidate anyway if they lose a primary.

At some point, an example must be made. Haslam may be that example. If he appoints himself and faces a primary challenge.

But that will be all out, internecine civil war.

The Davidson County GOP just named the county Trump co-chair as their chair this June. Quite a departure from the days of Stockholm Syndrome liberals like Tom Lawless.

  4. He’s making money by skimming the interest from the collected taxes.
Whatever happened to the ‘interest follows escrow’ rule?
If he wants to replace corker, it would be one crook replacing another.
