  1. I’m not an expert on this, and I’m not minimizing the bravery and skill of these guys (1gal) but sheer number of kills shouldn’t be the only criteria. You read about those guys and you feel inadequate, I do anyway. How about, I think his last name was Hickok, that put a shot dead straight through the scope of an enemy sniper.

  2. Joe24Pack,
Dang buddy. Hatchcock. Pretty damn close. He’s not only famous for that shot but also for a 48 hour crawl to off a couple NVA. Yes he belongs on the list. Maybe number 1.

  3. @joe6pak
I read his book several years ago….marine sniper I think is was titled. the cong called him “long trang” don’t remember what the translation was, but I bet they do.

  4. Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and like it, never really care for anything else thereafter.”

I love Hemingway. Read everything he’s ever written. Wish he would have finished Islands in The Stream.

  5. @Bad_Brad; actually Canada runs an advanced sniper school in Gagetown, New Brunswick that trains snipers from all over the world including the US. I suspect we also send some of our snipers to the US for advanced as well as specialized training.

  6. I think the list was for total kills which may be why Carlos Hathcock wasn’t on the list. He should have been because being a great sniper isn’t necessarily a function of total kills but rather all around skills.

  7. Thank you, IOTW commenters. I learn so much for you. I opened my Amazon account and ordered the Hathcock book to send to my son. His current deployment gives him a bit too much down time and he’ll love this man’s story!

  8. I highly recommend: Henderson, Charles (1986). Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills (1986 ed.),an account of Carlos Hathcock’s sniping in Vietnam. He is believed to be one of the most prolific snipers in America, but he often hunted completely alone for extended periods in the bush.
