Trump just issued MASSIVE THREAT to news media

AllenBWest: Even as he appears unstoppable for the GOP nomination, Donald Trump is making fresh campaign promises that are causing some massive waves. The latest target: the media.

Via Breitbart:

Donald Trump is going after the media, threatening to sue publications for writing negatively about him.

One of the things I’m gonna do, and this is only gonna make it tougher for me, and I’ve never said this before, but one of the things I’m gonna do if I win … is I’m gonna open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money. We’re gonna open up those libel laws.  MORE

90 Comments on Trump just issued MASSIVE THREAT to news media

  1. If someone or some mega corporation writes “PURPOSELY NEGATIVE AND HORRIBLE AND FALSE ARTICLES” why should they be protected from having to defend their accusations in court?
Why should individuals NOT have the right to face their accusers when the accuser is a mega political donor?

  2. It is most interesting that the (so called) Media which yells 1st amendment protections at the top of their lungs does not want
any protection for the 2nd amendment! When it comes to the
2nd amendment they constantly try to proffer an argument that
we can stifle here, here and there and still be well within the constitutional parameters. But to them the 1st amendment is sacrosanct and should not be touched! For the record I consider both amendments to be sacrosanct and not to be touched!

  3. “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech … or of the press …”

No mention of “false” press or “negative” press or even outright lies. We know that “unpopular” speech CAN be abridged, with impunity, if the malefactors are white and attempt to disseminate facts … so it’s not that great a stretch that the “press” could be brought to heel, by other than the socialists (their masters).

  4. Right you are, Sgt. York. Trump is pre-empting the inevitable smears from the Clinton proxies in the media, and putting their asses on notice.

    Well done, DT.

    Boehnerdict, over and out…

  5. All Too Much – Carol Burnett sued the National Enquirer for writing that she embarrassed herself publicly while drunk. She was advised by everyone NOT to pursue the suit because she was a public figure and could not win. As the child of alcoholics who always lived a responsible life, she sued knowing it could cost her dearly and her chances of winning were almost nil because of the libel laws.

She won. The National Enquirer is now much more careful about publishing stories that could be slanderous.

How is the threat of a lawsuit for printing knowingly false information “chilling” to the first amendment?

That, after all, is what Trump has called for. The six corporations that own the majority of the US media should not get a free pass to willfully destroy or malign people who don’t support their political views.

Bad enough we’re “Borked” by the media. Why should they not have to defend their words in court?

  6. Freedom of Speech does not mean freedom to intentionally harm someone. The Press should be no more, or less, obligated to tell the truth than any private citizen, when it comes to saying things they know to be false. It’s called ‘verification’ and it happens every day.

The Donald is right! The professional media has its own standards that SHOULD vet a story for accuracy. When they don’t they should be punished.

Now libel and slander should be left to us bloggers. Calling Michael Moore and Rosie O’Donnell oozing, fat pustules is a term of endearment.

  7. Another bullying threat from Trump. Remember this one?

    ‘Donald J. Trump ✔‎@realDonaldTrump
I hear the Rickets family, who own the Chicago Cubs, are secretly spending $’s against me. They better be careful, they have a lot to hide!’

Oh yes, I want a president that will use his power to silence critics! AGAIN. 7 1/2 years is enough! Trading one rights trampling, solipsistic president, for another will not ‘Make America Great, Again’.

  8. I’m disappointed that Allen West’s site is virtually misrepresenting what Trump said.
He’s NOT trying to stifle 2nd Amendment rights!
    “Slippery slope”…bullshit!

What he’s trying to do is hold the media accountable if they LIE, which is illegal and is called “libel”.
And I say, good for him.
As in many things, if you’re not doing something wrong, why worry?

  9. Shit, Sam…
    Solipsistic?

Now I gotta go get my word book out to see what that means.

I do see a difference here, as the Clinton pals in the media have no intention of reporting on Trump. They will do anything to take him out, while protecting her from any honest scrutiny.

  10. OK, Sam. I just looked it up. Solipsistic means self centered. After 7 years of this bs artist posing as an altruistic savior, I find it refreshing that we have a candidate who honestly has been out for his self interest his whole life. Just like the rest of us, if we’re being honest.

Contrast him with Hillary Clinton who is SO full of shit about all the people she’s going to ‘fight for’, while her record shows the only thing she fights for is funny money.

  11. Norman, I agree that the media should be libel for lies, but that is not what Trump said. Here is the relevant quote:

“I’m gonna open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles”

If he just went after the ‘false’ articles, I’d have no problem with what he said, but by adding “purposely negative and horrible” he is crossing the line.

It is also very hypocritical on his part. He is the master of pointing out the negative and horrible aspects of his opponents and critics.

  12. Ben Shapiro will be on the top of his list of people to sue.

  13. That’s a good start. President Trump needs to break up the media. The MSM has been in lock step as long as I can remember. Getting sick of switching channels only to see ‘competitors’ reporting the same stories, with the same spin, and often times in the same order. 99% of what they report benefits the democrat party. You’d think they get their marching orders from the White House.

  14. I need a better explanation of what he’s thinking. I hate litigation and lawyers. And anything that would bring more litigation of any type, I’m against. This won’t stop me from voting for him, and I understand what he’s trying to do. But there’s got to be a better way.

  15. People throughout the ages have been destroyed from false accusations, slander, libel, etc. Why not go after these people if you can prove that it was hurtful, loss of job offers, excommunicated from your community, etc. If you’re going to talk ass about someone, you better have the goods. JMHO.

  16. Menderman said: “It is also very hypocritical on his part. He is the master of pointing out the negative and horrible aspects of his opponents and critics.”

But is it the truth? If it’s the truth I have no problem with him going after them and vice versa.

  17. The media can be sued for knowingly (or not properly vetting) false and damaging news stories. It takes guts to go a few rounds in court with them but they can lose judgements and lots of money. But notice how Trump used the threat of the Presidency in this latest diatribe. Sorry folks, this guy could be more damaging to the Constitution then Obama. Geezuz, imagine the length of his enemies list. Hell, it probably includes the losers from the TV showed he hosted. Everytime I kind of warm up to him (while I’m not an American and can’t vote, unless I’m a Democrat :)) he says something like this. I hope that Ted Cruz can pull this off.

  18. “What if Obama had said this? Would you still like it?”
Obama doesn’t HAVE to say it. The media is on his side. Trump (and Republicans in general) have an uphill battle against the MSM. Trump is just smart enough to deal with it.
Do you think Cruz or Rubio can challenge the media like Trump does? That’s why Trump leads. He’s a leader and the ONLY threat against Dems.
    #MakeAmericaGreatAgain

  19. @Goldenfoxx,

I have absolutely no problem with with purposely negative and horrible, in fact I love it! What do you thing agitprop is?

Wanting to sue because you don’t like the purposely negative and horrible is what I have an issue with.

  20. Trump is right.
He can do anything and his bootlickers will salivate at the idea of him taking a walk through a pigsty.
Courts have determined that man made global warming is a FACT.
Trump wants any news organization that claims AGW is false to be sued out of existence.
That is just one example of what he is after. Giving the left a tool to shut the right up once and for all.

Leftists want the courts to have more power, and the legislative less. Tell me again what you think Trump is.

  21. @Menderman, when he said “purposely negative and horrible and false articles”, I inferred that he was referring to false articles, that were “negative” and “horrible”.
Not that there were three separate categories of article.

  22. Virtually every accusation Trump makes eventually is proven.

Do you think he’s messing around by pointing out how profusely Rubio sweats?

Is he messing around by pointing out what the Dems will do if Cruz gets the nomination or even the presidency? He’s not just blowing words out. He’s too smart for that.

He knew before we did that Cruz was using psy-ops to garner his supporters.

He used Carson’s own words from Carson’s book when he came after Carson.

When he went birther on Obama, he had the goods on him. You can’t possibly believe he didn’t.

Trump didn’t get where he is by falsehoods. Neither did Stone. These guys are no dummies.
    http://www.infowars.com/breaking-insider-leaks-koch-bros-rubio-plan-to-stop-trump/

Trump knows what the elitists are doing and planning to do, and he’s trying to blow a hole in the stranglehold the elitists and NWO has on us.

He’s putting the media on notice.

  23. “Tell me again what you think Trump is.”

    A strategist!

Come on folks, some of you haven’t learned anything regarding Trump’s success as a businessman as well as his success as a candidate. He’s repeated this multiple times on different occasions. Don’t you think his campaign managers or he himself would have clarified whether or not he meant anything other than libel against lies?

Those who keep taking the “bait” are becoming increasingly more and more foolish by the day.

Bottom line is everyone knows good and well Trump wouldn’t have a single shot at shutting down the 1st Amendment! The seed is planted so be patient and watch it bear fruit.

  24. When it is Obama doing executive orders to go around Congress it is absolutely terrible and unconstitutional. If Obama went after changing law to allow him to pursue the media it again would be unconstitutional and everyone on the right would oppose him.

I just wonder if Trump is elected and uses executive orders to try to get what he wants, if there will be opposition?

  25. factslady

“I’m gonna open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles”

It’s quoted right there in the header.

“purposely negative and horrible” IS the bate!

  26. From West’s opinion: Whether you are a Trump supporter or not, this is an issue we need to track and let him know we do not support any infringement on our First Amendment rights.

That’s fair enough and it isn’t an anti-Trump statement.

    @ Judgeroy
‘That’s a good start. President Trump needs to break up the media.’

Nope. That sounds too much like government control of the media. The gov’t should neither break up nor financially or otherwise offer support to the media to garner favor.

It is the job of the public, the citizens to take sorry, lying, sack of crap media to task by refusing to support the faulty product they offer and finding alternatives.

Allen West for Veep or Sec. of Defense.

  27. Eugenia is exactly right but sadly at this point it looks like even after what will be 8 years of Obama shredding the constitution and taking away our liberty the Trump sycophants in America want a dictator not a President. God Help us.

  28. tripseven, this is not just for you but many readers have made some disparaging comments to BOOM. Many have called him names (you didn’t) and told him to go away. Some have commented that he just posts links and is a troll.

    Please stop it.

  29. The fact that Congress is prohibited from abridging the “freedom of the press” in NO WAY should be construed as a blanket protection from libel, slander, or doing material harm to ANY citizen – nor does that fact prohibit redress for that harm.

The media has run roughshod over this nation by hiding behind feckless, paid-off judges purposefully misinterpreting the 1st Amendment, corrupt lawyers, and the fetid media mouthpieces, themselves.

Another example of how far we have strayed from our Constitution, and what it plainly says and means. We don’t need a bunch of pointy-headed, politically connected, shysters misreading the plain text of the document.

  30. Lets not forget that the Clintons and even Obama tried to silence people like Rush, Drudge and Hannity. Didn’t Obama run a website where people could report other people who said negative things about the Obamas. I think we all said that “I guess I’m on the list.” So Trump isn’t thew only one who doesn’t like negative things said about him.

  31. ‘but one of the things I’m gonna do if I win … is I’m gonna open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money. We’re gonna open up those libel laws. ‘

I don’t support stifling or stopping free speech in any way including if it is ‘purposely negative and horrible’. False and libelous is another matter but that should be up to a court to determine.

Look at it this way. The more legal restrictions you put on speech and freedom of the press, the more laws you make or ‘open up’, the more you make freedom of speech subject to court opinion and interpretation. How will that work for free speech advocates?

  32. tripseven, I’m talking about denigrating fellow commenters. It’s ok to disagree, but name calling and telling people they are not wanted should stop.

I know that you did not say that, but you did say he wasn’t saying anything intelligent and was only giving his opinion. Most of what is said here is people’s opinions. Even you saying that he never says anything intelligent is your opinion.

It’s unfortunate that it was your comment that caused me to fight back because you really didn’t deserve it like some of the other comments. Sorry.

  33. Claudia,

    No apology necessary!

BOOM’s statement “Trump sycophants” or we “want a dictator not a President” has been stated repeatedly by BOOM. With all due respect, and I mean that, denigration starts then and there.

You’re right, I will honorably retract the word “never” regarding my statement “you never write anything intelligent” since I have not read everything he has written.

For what it’s worth…BOOM’s consistent denigration is the root for my response to him/her.

  34. I know, tripseven. It bugs me when anyone stoops to calling each other “poopy heads”. Doesn’t matter if they were right or wrong; it’s just not necessary.

And after this election season, we will all be on the same “side” of freedom and are still ‘family’.

  35. A main point I think many miss is that the American press/media have been corrupt for decades! And one person threatening it by issuing a warning shot about truth telling is sending us off a cliff of constitutional indignation? How many other of the 1000 cuts are we incensed over? TSA is still groping 100% of us, looking at our privates and molesting our children! When’s the last time you read a story about that? Let’s not get all Utopian about things.

How close to these Journalistic Ethics and Standards do the press now adhere to?

“Journalism ethics and standards comprise principles of ethics and of good practice as applicable to the specific challenges faced by journalists. Historically and currently, this subset of media ethics is widely known to journalists as their professional “code of ethics” or the “canons of journalism”.[1] The basic codes and canons commonly appear in statements drafted by both professional journalism associations and individual print, broadcast, and online news organizations.

While various existing codes have some differences, most share common elements including the principles of—truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability—as these apply to the acquisition of newsworthy information and its subsequent dissemination to the public.[1][2][3][4]

Like many broader ethical systems, journalism ethics include the principle of “limitation of harm.” This often involves the withholding of certain details from reports such as the names of minor children, crime victims’ names or information not materially related to particular news reports release of which might, for example, harm someone’s reputation.[5][6]” ~Wikipedia

I love this country and I want my life back! If Clinton gains the WH, it’s OVER. It’s not speculation that Clinton and those Ramparts of Truth and Journalistic Excellence (sarc) called the media will do EVERYTHING to preserve their power. So stop the crazy talk about defending the constitution just this once! For God’s sake, I’m begging you!

  36. OK tripseven since you singled me out how would you answer this question?

If Hillary Clinton evolved on the issues, ran for President as a Republican, and had enough crossover Democrat votes to win the GOP nomination, would you vote for her?

  37. I get it you hate Ted Cruz because he’s Cuban American, you said so before. You are supporting a candidate because of his skin color just like people did with Obama and that’s sad.

BTW: It would probably be better if you just ignored me instead of always thinking you have made such a clever comeback to my comments.

  38. “If Hillary Clinton evolved on the issues…blah blah blah”

When she does we can go further in that regard. One step at a time…

    Worked for us with Reagan!

If you’re found to be wrong will you come back for crow dinner as I would?

  39. “I get it you hate Ted Cruz because he’s Cuban American, you said so before.”

That’s a bald face lie. Did you learn that from Cruz?

If I thought you were interested on why I don’t care for Cruz I’d tell you. But you’re not. You are a Troll.

  40. Tripseven; Reagan was NEVER a liberal or a progressive.
Kids today have no idea what the Democrat party was like back when Reagan was a member.
Both parties cared about the constitution and Democrats were almost as likely to be supported by the NRA and other pro-freedom groups as Republicans.
Trump was a Democrat after they devolved into Communism and America hatred.

  41. Claudia, I can imagine you’re thinking of me in part RE: boomlet.
He (as “True Liberty”) *IS* 99% a worthless, destructive troll.

WHEN he posts something with an original thought, I might post a disagreement or ignore it; 99% of his trash is link after link preceeded with little more than insults.

You don’t like what I say? BAN ME.

He/they is/are EXACTLY the sort of filth which promotes the
“Divide and Conquer” approach to help the Dems win…
which is what it seems you want to avoid after the nomination (“And after this election season, we will all be on the same “side” of freedom and are still ‘family’.”) Or, is that just Rodney King wishful thinnking, a la “can’t we all just get along?”

  42. as a P.S.

    There ARE “family” folks here.
Many including me are wound up about the politics.
I posted something disagreeing with Unruly, and he snarked that I was “working for Trump.”
    He’s “family” in my book.
    Agree to disagree.

That’s NOT what we’re talking about.
    The suddenly-appearing trolls ARE.
The my way or I’m not voting or voting for Hillary trolls ARE.
“Divide and Conquer” AND ITS PROPONENTS are the enemy.

  43. Bad_ Brads own words so who’s lying?

Boom, after tonight all those damn Cubans look like nut jobs. Maybe you should think about relocating to Cuba. I dunno.

  44. I miss the old IOTW where we could all agree to disagree with a little humor, and not puff chested insults and name calling. We’re all on the same, something some people seem to forget. Guess it’s just the lingering trauma of getting their asses kicked and their lunch money taken away so often as a kid…..

  45. “Boom, after tonight all those damn Cubans look like nut jobs. Maybe you should think about relocating to Cuba. I dunno.”

That comment was made in response to Rubio’s and Cruz’s simultaneous and ineffective attacks on Trump during the debates.
    It was a JOKE.

  46. BB; That link is bizarre, to say the least.
Kennedy spearheaded tax cuts as the way to stimulate the economy.
If you look at his actual record you will find that while a bit doveish on foreign affairs, he was well to the right of every president since Reagan.

  47. “BB; That link is bizarre, to say the least.”

I was actually a little shocked. Reason being how many times have your heard some talking head say something to the effect “Today JFK would be a conservative”? I’ve heard it quite a few times. But stop and think about Lyndon Johnson. That dude was a full on socialist too. I’m sure the Dems have drifted, I don’t think they’ve drifted as far as some think.

  48. Czar of Defenestration , my above comment was not directed at you. Your comment wasn’t even there when I started typing. I spent a lot of time editing my comment so as to not offend anybody. So don’t go poking your finger in my eye. Again.

You “snarked” about Pamela Geller in my bullpen post. I returned the same snark. I’m not part of this shit slinging. And I will stand with Pamela Geller before I will stand with any candidate in this ratfucking race. My vote is already in.

vetting is good. shit slinging is for the Left.

  49. BB; Johnson was not Kennedy. Look into why Johnson was picked for VP. VPs are often picked to appease a group that is contrary to the President. Reagan even did that with Bush.
There has always been a progressive wing in the democrat party. The peaked during the depression and receded quickly after FDR.
During the 60’s they started gaining ground and have moved steadily since.

  50. JohnS
The topic of tonights discussion was not Johnson versus Kennedy. It was how far and when did the Dem party go full blown Socialist. Reagan was not the only Hollywood type to bail on the Dems. Charlton Heston changed party affiliation about the same time Reagan did, 63 or 65. I’m not trying to argue with anybody just found it interesting.

  51. TO Unruly

    You’re missing my point!

I’m saying that, whether disagreement or misunderstanding, the “usual suspects” here (NOT the troll turds) have the ability AND DESIRE to communicate…like you and I…UNLIKE worthless scum like boom and true liberty, who appeared suddenly in January and will likely disappear just as quickly as the electoral cycle passes.

  52. ‘UNLIKE worthless scum like boom and true liberty, who appeared suddenly in January’

True Liberty’s comment were always very respectful and on the mark. I’m beginning to think you are just a part of a little click that attacks anyone who doesn’t agree with you.

  53. Czar, I don’t think I missed your point. We are all family here, except the occasional troll. I think all the fighting attracts trolls. And I’m not accusing you or anybody else.

I am just disappointed when I see people (not you) post things that would most likely repel a browser-by who is just stopping by to have a look, test the waters like I did when I first found this site. But it wasn’t like this when I first came here, so I stayed. Might be different if I just found this site for the first time today, though.

Those who are doing it surely must know who they are. It makes for bad reading when people stoop to name calling or bashing those who disagree. And I know that you already know this, I’m saying it in hopes that maybe a light will go on with the ones doing it.

Peace. I’m tired. Got an email to write. Be back later.

    I still love this place!!!!!!!
