FOX: President Trump on Monday night announced federal appeals court judge Brett M. Kavanaugh as his nominee to replace the retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Kavanaugh, 53, a graduate of Yale Law School and a former law clerk to Kennedy in 1993, was elevated to the powerful federal appeals court in the District of Columbia by President George W. Bush, under whom he had served as a White House lawyer and staff secretary.
With approximately 300 opinions issued in 12 years as a judge and a raft of legal articles and speaking engagements, Kavanaugh was the most prolific of the nominees the president was said to be considering for the role.
Kennedy is expected to step down at the end of July.
Here are three things you should know about Kavanaugh as he heads into the confirmation process.
He worked on the investigation that led to President Clinton’s impeachment
Kavanaugh co-wrote independent counsel Kenneth Starr’s report in the 1990s. He laid out the legal framework supporting Clinton’s impeachment for his affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Clinton could have been impeached for misleading the public and lying to staff members, Kavanaugh argued then, according to The New York Times. However, he later wrote that he thought presidents shouldn’t have to deal with criminal investigations or civil lawsuits while in office.
It’s unclear how Kavanaugh would rule on abortion
Kavanaugh has never directly ruled on abortion as a judge, so it’s unclear how he would decide the subject. He did, however, dissent recently on an appeals court decision that allowed a pregnant teenaged illegal immigrant who was in federal custody to have an abortion. Additionally, the nominee has not publicly said whether he’d favor overturning Roe v. Wade.
He has close ties to the Bush family
Kavanaugh was nominated to the federal appeals court by former President George W. Bush, who said he selected Kavanaugh “because of the force of his mind, the breadth of his experience and the strength of his character.” more here
He smells ‘Bushie’. Do the nevertrumpers like him? Because, if they do…
Barrett on deck when RBG passes wind!
Chances are, he’ll have to pick another one from the stack anyway.
The “pre” info on this guy was all over the map.
What say you all?
She Who Must Be Obeyed is royally pissed! …. a Trumpster since jump street, she’s railing around the house, saying this is Trump’s first bad decision
‘Strike One’ she keeps yelling
I’m trying to calm her down by saying trust Trump’s judgement, but she retorts that Trump should have treated the pick as his last pick he’ll ever get because you can’t predict the future
…. can’t argue w/ that
I just don’t trust the Bush family closeness. He even married one of their secretaries.
Smart move. Palatable to the likes of Susan Collins. A strong Constitutionalist. The DNC has already released a statement that this guy shouldn’t be allowed any where’s near the SCOTUS. Trumps best chance of getting an appointment.
Some of you guys need to do some more research on this guy.
And no, he wasn’t my first pick. But he’s not a bad pick. And he’s the best pick that stands a slim chance of getting approved.
Laura Ingraham has been touting Kavanaugh for weeks-if that makes anyone feel better/worse?!?
She just quoted Kavanaugh, “ I revere the Constitution…”
All I know, Hillary didn’t pick him. 👍
Maybe he won’t make it.
Bitch McConnell liking this guy can’t be good.
don’t have too big a problem w/ his Bush ties … Alito was a Bush pick … Roberts is usually reliable (except when we needed him most!)
My biggest concern is that I read somewhere where Kavanaugh agreed w/ Roberts on the ObamaCare tax angle …. disturbing, if true
Even TRUMP fans still don’t get him. That’s why with less than 2 years in, he’s proven to be the best in my lifetime.
I suspect Kennedy played a key role in his replacement. Will he withstand the confirmation hearings? Will he be a Judge who adheres to the Constitution as written and intended by the signers or will he interpret their intent based upon what he “thinks” their words would mean now?
Not knowing too terribly much about those who were considered, what I had seen, heard and read of Barrett was extremely impressive. I was disappointed, yet hopeful she will be a choice in the near future.
5/9/2006 Schumer: “Do you consider Roe v. Wade to be an abomination?”
Kavanaugh: “If confirmed to the D.C. Circuit, I would follow Roe v. Wade faithfully and fully. That would be binding precedent of the Court. It’s been decided by the SCOTUS”
That doesn’t sound like an “originalist”.
How can someone who was raised Catholic say that?
Maybe he said what he had to in order to be confirmed.
It’s amazing how one person can piss off so many people on the right and the left. I wish I had that power. Judging by the angst, I’d say it’s a good pick.
Czar has some good names for people that don’t see eye to eye with him on all things Trump, so to avoid being called a “stompy footed, keyboard warrior” I’m going to start right off supporting this. Actually I think this is an OK choice. He is probably more right than left, but it’s going to be hard for any real big time opposition to fight him. After the mid terms, and assuming we pick up a few elephants in the senate Trump can afford to pick a stronger conservative and expect to win approval. Just kidding Czar, feel free to call me names anytime.
“Close Bush family ties”. Well, I liked W before 2016, so I can see past that, as long as the rest of his history is good.
@Jethro
The Church (Catholic and Protestant) are filled with Sunday Morning Christians with their eyes focused on the narrow path, with their hearts and actions fixed on the wide.
“The DNC has already released a statement that this guy shouldn’t be allowed any where’s near the SCOTUS”
That’s fine, but the left says a lot of things. They’re sneaky like that. 😉
Bottom line. I don’t care if he was poking GW in the pooper, interpret the Constitution as it was written, don’t rewrite it. Start with the 2cnd. He has a history of doing just that. And he’s the best shot at a confirmation. A fxcking smart choice.
What I’m saying is, the left will complain if he picked hillary for SCOTUS. So them being upset means nothing to me.
Bad_Brad, OK, we shall see. Like I said up there, he may have to redraw from the stack anyway. So let’s hope it isn’t that other douche that starts with “K”. What’s his name?
@ Lead Salad
Exactly what DH said tonight.
I wanted Ami, but saving her for RBG’s seat would really be poetic.
Bush. Kagan. Rove. Bad companions corrupt good morals.
@cato ~ it’s not ‘Jethro’ … it’s ‘Jethto’

If the militant left has anything to do with it they’ll be protesting in front of his home. Don’t think that won’t happen. If it does, some Patriots need to get there. I think it’s on like Donkey Kong and we’re the only idiots that don’t realize it.
Walked into the gym on Saturday. A bunch of white Zombies. They looked like freaken ANTIFA. Black hair, no tan, an d Tatts. Also one older black guy that looked like Lou Gossett Jr’s brother. Complete with the infectious smile. A great guy, we laughed our asses off. On the way out he went over and grabbed his gym bag, pulled out a MAGA hat out put it on and started out the door. Can’t wait to see him again. Occasionally you meet the best people at the gym. Actually I’ve met the best people at the gym.
Looks to me like President Trump went with a nominee that can get confirmed easily. Move the court back to original intent, and use this nomination to maximum effect leading into the midterms. Maybe that was the smart move for the long run, since he’s got a good record in spite of his Bush ties.
Question before confirmation, ‘Have you ever been a member of any secret society, such as Skull and Bones?’
Don’t worry Crooked Hillary voters – this will only affect the court for about 40 years or so. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
As much pleasure as this is going to be watching this battle, I can’t wait for what awaits us when they finally drag Ruth Bader Ginsburg out of the Supreme Court by her cold heels. She believed all those polls that had the most qualified person to ever run for anything getting elected. That is the best decision she ever made. Her replacement will be the most epic legal brawl since Judge Robert Bork got shafted by Kennedy and Biden, but the rules have changed since then thanks to Harry Reid. God speed, Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
It’s what – 89 days until the mid-terms? I think Kavanaugh is OK, plus he’s more palatable to a lot of people than Barrett. Trump is putting pressure on the red-state Democrats. If they don’t vote for this relatively inoffensive choice, they will pay in the mid-terms.
Once we get a secure majority in the Senate, and Buzzi Ginsberg bites the dust, then Trump can select the most bad-ass Conservative on the planet. And he will.
“Kavanaugh”…. hmmm.
Sounds a little “ethnic” to my ears. You know, like he has bushy hairs sticking out of his ears and smells like onions.
Marco,
I think RBG’s in her office looking for some glue to permanently keep her ass on the bench.
I have no idea about Kavanaugh and I don’t waste time fretting about it. That’s for other people, I guess.
President Trump picked him and that’s okay with me.
If I was in battle and my superior said attack left flank..I wôuld not second guess him and say why? Let’s try this…
Forgetting who’s leading.
I don’t pretend to know his plan, but I feel at ease with him as Commander
I do admit the female is easy on the eyes. Oh, well…
P.S. – I listened to Kavanaugh’s speech tonight. He seemed like he was sincerely humbled by the nomination. Good upbringing, not a showman.
Seemed almost in tears at the beginning. IMO, he’ll do fine.
riverlife_callie, Hmm…good point about the red-state dems.
Ding Dong the Hillary Witch is dead.
And maybe 53 years of Statism.
I am very happy for my troops future.
MAGA2016

I wrote on Pinko’s show post,
“I get it Kavanagh is the Kennedy replacement. An appeasement for the left screaming for the swing vote judge and Kavanagh fits the bill.
Trump is a master gamesman. I trust his court appointments. It’s just so critical there are a majority of solid conservatives seated on the Supreme Court before the end of President Trump’s second term.”
Not panicking. Kavanagh is a EGOP darling. Heard his name and needed Pepto-Bismol. Agreed, there will be more opportunities for better conservatives on the Supreme Court after Ginsberg and Breyer run out of steam soon. Yes, Kavanagh is light years better than anyone Hellary would have picked.
He’s solid on religious liberty, 2nd amendment and free speech. Will the SC overturn Roe v wade? I hope so but doubt it. I think the Bush family stuff is being overplayed. Just because Bush nominated doesn’t mean their best buds. Federalist Society loves this guy. Trump seemed to put some serious effort into this pick. I feel good about it.
I know very little about any of the potential nominees, but I cannot imagine that the final vote would differ by more than one or two senators for any of the four that were listed – or of the 25 from the original list. Qualifications are important – but they will be irrelevant to the confirmation vote, except that were a nominee particularly unqualified they would not be approved.

I guess it’s one thing at a time. Kennedy caved time after time on the 2cnd. Constantly tied to re interpret the Constitution. If Kavanagh gets the 2cnd straight, we can wait for the next appointment. That’s a big step. Not to mention this is Trump BEST shot at getting someone approved before November. Strategically, it’s a great pick.

riverlife_callie
It wasn’t the Dems he was after. It was Lisa Communiskowksi and Susan CommyCollins. It’s that simple. He cant depend on his own party. This will be a very tough appointment.
If the demons hate him that’s good enough for me.
Brad – true enough. But if the red-state Dems vote party line, and that upsets their constituents, we have a good chance of getting a bigger majority in the Senate. Then Murkowski and Collins can suck gas. As usual, our President is playing more than one hand.
Gawd, I can’t stand turncoats. Why don’t they just switch parties and be honest about it?
Bad Brad, I disagree. I don’t think the dems can stop this nomination. Even if McCain, Collins and Murkowski vote no, Trump only needs to pick up a couple of these red state dems and Pence gets the tie breaker vote. Done deal.
riverlife_callie
The DNC has already released a statement that any Democrat that votes for this appointment will ruin their political career. I think there’s at least two that are ready to swap party affiliation. They’ve gone to Gxd Gxmn far. They’re off the charts communist and itching for a fight. They fxcked up and forgot to get our guns.
don’t understand the argument that Kavanaugh was picked as a ‘compromise’ & he’ll sail through the nomimation process much easier than …. whomever. remember, the whole process is led by McConnell, & getting the pick on the court by October is up to him.
you don’t always choose your battles, but PDT has known this was coming for a while … hell, everyone knew Kennedy was retiriing & Trump was going to get this pick … the question was ‘when’. it is possible Kennedy influenced Trump’s decision, we’ll never know. this could very well be a Kennedy/McConnell squeeze play
I will concede & go with Trump’s judgement. he’s had a long time to contemplate this & has a track record of accessing candidates for various positions … whether it’s the best person to build a hotel, the best candidate to run a business, the best person on a Reality TV show, help run the country, or be on the Supreme Court.
frankly, most ‘conservative’ picks are a crapshoot. from Warren to O’Conner to Stevens to Souter to Kennedy & Roberts most have a shaky track record that has been quite disappointing to those of us that believe the Constitution.
I wanted Barrett. hopefully, he gets her on the court (only time will tell) … but, if Ginsberg lasts the next 6 years (a possibility; fight w/ your best today, because tomorrow you’re gonna find yourself in an entirely different circumstance)…. would we then be saying Trump wasted the pick?
… hindsight is 20/20
Jon
Review the numbers. It’s all over the INTERNET. Macshitstain doesn’t vote. It’s his really LONG fxcking good bye. MCOWsky and Collins vote against. There’s no way. Not to mention Jeff the woman Flake. This approval is highly doubtful. If Trump pulls this off it’s another miracle.
i was hoping for Amy. I wanted Trump to seat her next to the breathing cadaver and watch her stroke out. Presto. Another pick for PDJT
Believe it or not, the traitor from Arizona just released a statement praising Kavanaugh’s record.
Don’t discount the possibility that Justice Clarence Thomas will opt to retire before President Trump’s first term is up. Then he could be replaced by another, younger Conservative judge. He could see that as his greatest duty and his best revenge on all those involved in his “high tech lynching.”
joe6pak
Witch traitor? There’s at least two.
Good one, Bad Brad…
They fu({ed up, and forgot to get our guns.
Brad, the one whose name we do not say. He qualified his praise by saying he is looking forward to a fair hearing. I wouldn’t put it past him to change his position.
Bad_Brad. Great point concerning the Second Amend. With so much winning- thanks to God’s mercy and President Trump, it’s difficult being patient. I’m OK with Kavanagh …for now. He’ll be confirmed. It wont be as contentious as most think.
99th
He gets this guy confirmed and we end up picking up a couple more seats, he could save the Republic for the foreseeable future at the end of the next six years.
Bad_Brad. Agreed. I like your analysis. Makes sense.
This guy is tainted by his association with the Bush family, but ai want to believe that concern has been vetted away.
The Bushes turned out to be very bad news.
If he did indeed engineer Justice Robert’s save of Obamacare, he will be a lifelong disappointment when the tough issues come before the Bench — like Justice Roberts. A Justice Kennedy clone to replace Justice Kennedy. Wasted opportunity.
The progressive judges Sotomayor and Kavanaugh were both nominated to the Fed Bench by leftists Presidents named George. the praise from the Manchurian candidate dying in AZ should be a 2nd warning that we have another Souter here.
If Ronny and Barry were liberals then Kavanaugh ic clearly conservative!
why don?
I wish it was a stronger pick. “I am proud that most of my clerks are women” “Roe vs Wade is settled law” etc. I’m concerned he’s a squish and hope I’m wrong.
Hiring McMaster wasn’t exactly a stroke of genius either.
Just saying that there was better choices. I guess we’ll see.
