Breitbart: United States Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the battle for Iwo Jima 75 years ago today.
“During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division take the crest of Mount Suribachi, the island’s highest peak and most strategic position, and raise the U.S. flag,” according to History.com.
Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with the men as they ascended the peak and recorded the initial event. The Americans cheered as the first flag was raised, and hours later more Marines came up the ridge with a larger one.
The second flag-raising was photographed by Associated Press (AP) photographer Joe Rosenthal and is considered one of the most famous war pictures in U.S. history, according to the National Archives website. read more
When men were men. Not sure we could do that with todays generation.
…….Back when the country was filled with pride instead of p.c. and bullshit.
That flag was raised on the fourth day of battle, their was still a kong way to go before it was over. The last night was very bad for the Marines.
My son is in the Navy. He is in Bahrain right now. My daughters class of 2019 had 20 kids entering the military. There’s a lot of 18-25 year olds willing to step up and do the right thing. I know it is easy to judge this generation as a group ( I do it too), but then I meet a young person who is in the military or working in a trade and remind myself there are plenty of young persons who see the opportunity and greatness of America. I don’t know if we could ever do something like WW II but I know a lot of kids who are willing to take the oath and defend our nation
Kind of amazing that two of the flag raisers in the iconic photograph of the Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi were misidentified for more than seventy years. Both of the two men survived the battle and never told anyone that they were the actual flag raisers in the famous Rosenthal photograph of the second flag raising. Perhaps they didn’t want the attention or to create any controversy, but every Marine on that island deserves to be remembered by a grateful country. Never understood why the United States returned Iwo Jima to Japan. It was paid for with the deaths of nearly seven thousand Americans.
Ditto, Ken. My son is Navy also. Those who think this generation doesn’t have what it takes are clueless.
Last time I was in DC awhile ago, stayed in VA and passed the LARGE statue of those guys to and from our hotel. Awesome view
GUUUUNG HOOOOOOOO!
Jesus Christ.
If protesting must be outlawed to prevent broken windows, why not ban airplanes to prevent airplane crashes or ban knives to stop stabbings?
If Americans don’t defend free speech, religious freedom, gun rights, freedom from unconstitutional searches and seizures, the right to silence, and the freedom from torture and extrajudicial assassination, what part of the Bill of Rights do they support?
What country is this?
