Probably hanging hardened steel. Shoot steel core ammo at hanging steel and expect that to happen. It could be steel welded to a car spring with an old wheel as a base too.

I was at a bowling pin match and the pins were on old tires filled with dirt at 15 yards. A guy was shooting RNL 45 ah about 600 FPS and a low shot sent a ricochet back onto a guy’s forehead and it knocked the puddin out of him.

That ended that until they fixed that situation. I can’t remember how they corrected it. I think they put the pins on a 4×8 cot at a 45 on the edge facing the shooters on saw horses at both ends from then on.

  2. In the comments under the YouTube there is a lot of phantasmagoric bullshit being spoken. I was standing behind, way behind, like a quarter mile behind, a guy shooting a machine gun at an old piece of farm equipment and ricochets were going in all directions including straight back. He was shooting steel core 3006 IIRC. I got the hell out of there pronto.

You can own a machine gun in Montana and I had heard them shooting this one and curiosity got the best of me after a couple hours and I went over to take a look. The damn fools didn’t seem all that concerned.

  3. really old video. saw that YEARS ago. the forensics at the time blamed the ricochet on a severely cratered, dimpled steel target. also, though not then mentioned, i suspect the target was rigid. if you’re going to shoot steel, only shoot something like SMOOTH AR500 or AR550 steel. hanging an AR500 target from chains will deflect the energy to the ground. if you must should rigid, mount the rigid target with a slight angle to the ground for the same reason. summary? do not shoot dimpled steel,

  4. The Capitol Police, in their shooting range on G-1 level of the Rayburn, had a weird reddish-colored rubber (about 3/8″ thick) behind their targets.
My guess is it kept the ricochets to a minimum.
It could be shot through hundreds of times and not deteriorate.

    Cool stuff.

  5. Reminds me of Rick O’Shea, western cartoon strip, and a good one.

That one, and Tumbleweeds, were always the first ones I turned to when I got to the “funny pages”.

Two characters in Tumbleweeds: Henrietta Hamhocks, and the town undertaker.

The Undertaker had a sign over his place of business: “You Plug ‘Em, I’ll Plant ‘Em.”

Henrietta was an aggressive lady looking for a husband, as I recall. The townsmen found her a little scary.
