United Way: More than 40% of US households can’t afford household basics

American Thinker: According to a new study by the United Way, 43% of U.S. households can’t afford basics like housing, food, child care, health care, transportation, and a cell phone.

The political implications are profound – or they would be if the Democrats were to pause long enough in their Trump-bashing to highlight economic insecurity as a campaign issue.  But since the Democrats are apparently too stupid to stop their demonization of the president and address an issue near and dear to the hearts of Trump’s base, Republicans may yet hold on to the House.

  1. I’m amazed at the number of fat poor people who can afford tattoos, cigarettes, booze, iPhones, and flat screen TVs, but “can’t afford” to pay their utility bills, buy their own groceries, etc.

Sorry. I lived in California too long. Living in California would make Mother Theresa cynical.

  2. Seems like an awfully high percentage, if you ask me. Of course, the United Way
wouldn’t have any reason to spin the numbers and make Americans seem to be
    poorer than they actually are.

    …Now would they?

  3. Every kid from 2nd grade on up has a $500.00 cell phone these days and who hasn’t been at the check out counter behind a fat woman with a EBT card who drives off in an Escalade? On top of all that the economy is doing better yet it wasn’t a problem during the Øbamboozler’s term?

Somebody hand me a cell phone.
    I’m calling Bullshit!

  4. Could there be a correlation with the browning of America? Whites are now 60% of the population. 100%… subtract 60% = 40%…. hmmmm pretty close to 43%, probably 35% nonwhite, 8% white…. Jesus! What did we allow to be imported into our country? If the 1965 immigration act hadn’t passed, the biggest issue in America would be spaying and neutering your pets.

  5. I know I’m some kind of freak but I’ve “needed” a phone only a few times in my life. Since everyone else has one they’re not worth carrying around.

  6. I call BS on this. United Way’s job is getting people to give them money to redistribute to their pet charities. If we admit that the social safety net that provides Obamaphones, medical care, free housing, free clothing and free food allowing people free time to indulge in their side business of selling drugs tax free has eliminated poverty for all but a handful, United Way would be out of business.

If 43% of the population was in the dire straits they say that would be half of us posting on this board.

How many people do you know who fit the UW description?

  7. Maybe they’re like the “single” mom on the corner with a pack of kids whose husband is probably not her legal one–probably scamming with food stamps, Medicaid, etc. “single” while husband has a good job. We just happened to see some of her mail blowing in the wind from a credit collection firm and she has a dif last name. (wht not blk) My husband called the collection attorney and told all we know. Reportedly the grandparents own the house.

  8. @Page O Turner
‘How many people do you know who fit the UW description?’

None. What i see in my area are plenty of help wanted signs and ads and not enough applying for the jobs.

    Triple BS on UW.

  9. Come to think of it an older colleague (wht not blk) at my volunteer job disclosed that her ‘partner’ (male) and she do not marry cuz she would lose her food stamps and medical–she told me how much he makes that is about 25K more than my husband and I combined–maybe we should all divorce and scam the system then? nobody cares about legal marriage anymore? NO SHAME but I couldn’t do it.

  10. Just thought of another one with a hetero “partner”(older, wht)–SO IMO–some of the middle class are scamming the food stamp and Medicaid systems while others aren’t. I wonder how many are

  11. These statistics remind me of the homeless numbers when George H.W. Bush was president. Every week the news reported ever higher numbers of homeless until it reached into the millions. When Clinton became president the issue disappeared over night.

…Exactly the reason United Way would push this crap.

  13. United way donates big to Planned Parenthood. In addition, they pressure some companies to “Strongly Encourage” their employees to donate when they don’t choose to.

  14. @Onginer: Every now and then something triggers an inspiration in me, and I get an idea.
Just now, a few of the words in your comment sorta leapt off the screen and into my consciousness: “immigration”…”spaying”…”neutering”…

    Hmmm…

    😉

  15. I worked for UW in my community for a short time. I left because I became disgusted with how political they were…raging liberals. In my time there, I never heard statistics like 40%.

I would guess that UW is attempting to diminish Trump’s economic success so that they don’t lose their flow of donations. Don’t kid yourself. Even though UW is not-for-profit, it’s all about the $$$.

  16. Pure, unadulterated BULLSHIT.

    “Here, feel this.”
    “Feels like shit!”

    “Here, smell this.”
    “Smells like shit!”

    “Here, taste this.”
    “Tastes like shit!”

“Aren’t you glad I pointed it out so you didn’t step in it?”
