DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department is accusing Walgreens of filling millions of prescriptions in the last decade and more without a legitimate purpose, including for dangerous amounts of opioids, according to a lawsuit filed this week.

Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the complaint says the drugstore chain’s pharmacists filled controlled substance prescriptions with clear red flags that indicated they were highly likely to be unlawful. Walgreens also systematically pressured pharmacists to fill prescriptions without taking the time to confirm their validity, according to the complaint.

The lawsuit says Walgreens filled “unlawful” prescriptions in violation of the federal Controlled Substances Act and sought reimbursement from federal health care programs for them in violation of the False Claims Act.

Walgreens, one of the country’s largest pharmacy chains, with over 8,000 locations, said in a statement that it stands behind its pharmacists. It said they say fill legitimate prescriptions for Food and Drug Administration-approved medications written by Drug Enforcement Administration-licensed prescribers in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. more here

  1. The gubmint knew about this skunky stuff for a while. They just figgered it was time to do finally do something about it when they saw that a new sheriff coming to town! U.S. Justice lawyers will hold this up like a shield while struttin for Trump and patting themselves on the back!!

  2. I call bullshit. All the prescriptions these days are done electronically from the doctor’s office. Paper scripts are dead and gone. If they get a fill order, they need them selves upto fill it. End of story.

I’ve seen how these assholes fuck with my wife’s legitimate drug orders from her doctor and it’s an absolute trainwreck. They have set themselves up as a part of the treatment program instead of a vendor. Really? Not your job motherfuckers. You need to be looking at potentially harmful interactions and consulting with the patient and their provider. Short of that, fill what has been prescribed and shut the fuck up.

  3. Lowell – I have to say that I have not experienced that here where I am. I’m not saying you are wrong by any means, only that we have a very good local pharm-chain here in CLE-West that does a magnificent job. I have tried others and know them to be on the up and up and you don’t get jacked around.

When I was in Chigago in the mid 70s Walgreens was the place to go.
Now that they are here (and just about everywhere) I won’t go.

My local Publix grocery store’s pharmacy is first rate. The only resistance I’ve ever had there was when I had prescriptions for A and B and taking the combination was known to cause problems. Once I assured them I already knew about the interaction and never took the meds within several days of each other, all was well. That’s the sort of attention that I like and approve of.

  5. This is all junk as the regulations were just tightened a few years ago. Likely is a power grab. There is no real problem with codeine products and some countries sell them across the counter without a doctor. My feeling is that all meds should be readily available without a doctor. If you desire to know how to use the drug, go to the doctor. But there are far too many many people involved in our medical care.
