Vatican: Pope Francis Bans Sale of Cigarettes–But Not Cigars

CNS: The Vatican announced on Thursday that Pope Francis is banning the sale of cigarettes–but not cigars–at the Vatican, starting at the first of the year.

The announcment was made in a statement put out by Vatican spokesman Greg Burke.  As reported by Vatican Radio, Burke’s statement said that the Holy See “cannot be cooperating with a practice that is clearly harming the health of people.”

The Vatican has been making money from the sale of cigarettes, according to Burke’s statement.

“Although the cigarettes sold to employees and pensioners in the Vatican at a reduced price are a source of revenue for the Holy See, no profit can be legitimate if it puts lives at risk,” the statement said.

Vatican Radio reported: “He added that the sale of large cigars would continue for the time being because the smoke is not inhaled.”  read more

  1. This guy is such a fraud !
After communing with God, in the Catholic Churches most sacred chambers, he comes out and says, ‘God said we must stop smoking’ !

I guess God has given up on climate change. 😑

  2. The message is clear, marxist pervert priests who engage in homosexuality, pedophilia and smoking must stop smoking cigarettes, it sends the wrong message to today’s youth.

  3. If god didn’t want us to smoke why did he put tobacco on earth? Remember all that giving of animals, fishes and plants thingy? This guy has stuck his nose into the wrong side of damn near everything he has opined on. Time for him to go.

  4. What? The Vatican can’t tax cigarettes?
Do the Italians get all the swag?

Fuck Francis. I may take up cigarettes, again. No … actually … no.
Unless I can get them from a smuggler.

    izlamo delenda est …

  5. @moochoman: You’re absolutely right. And if God didn’t want us to smoke dope, why did He put marijuana plants on earth? And if He didn’t want us to do cocaine,…

    I could go on, but I won’t.

    🙂

  6. Is this like an a la cart thing where you can pick and choose the sins you can do? Because I’ll tell you whut. Let the women have birth control and they’ll give up all the tobacco products and they won’t have abortions in exchange. lol
