Video: Ted Cruz Fact Checks Alyssa Milano During Gun Control Debate

Breitbart: Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) schooled leftist actress Alyssa Milano on Tuesday during a gun control debate, arguing that America should do more to combat gun violence but without infringing upon Americans’ right to bear arms.

Cruz and Milano agreed to hold a “civil” debate last week on gun control.

Milano opened up the debate, explaining that she is “terrified” because she does not know how to keep her family safe from gun violence. Milano said that despite their disagreement on the issue, she believes that with “mutual respect and humility” they can affect positive change in the country.

Fred Guttenberg, the father of Jaime Guttenberg, who was killed during the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, attended the debate as well.

The actress implored Sen. Cruz to “lead” on the nation’s gun violence problem.

Sen. Cruz said during the debate that he supports the Second Amendment, while at the same time proposed legislation that would improve school safety and prevent criminals from obtaining weapons.

Sens. Cruz and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) sponsored the Protecting Communities and Preserving the Second Amendment Act of 2019, which would improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and bolster alerts to law enforcement. The legislation would also criminalize “straw purchasing” of firearms and gun trafficking, allow firearms dealers to utilize the NICS database for voluntary background checks of employees, and allow firearms dealers to access the FBI’s National Crime Information Center stolen-gun database so that a firearm is not stolen prior to acquisition.

Sen. Cruz said during the debate that the Grassley-Cruz legislation would have helped prevent the mass shooting in Odessa, Texas.

Milano then quoted former President Ronald Reagan, suggesting that Republicans have supported gun control the past. Reagan said:

I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen to own guns for sporting, for hunting, and so forth, or for home defense. But I do believe that an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for the defense of the home.

Cruz fact checked Milano’s use of the Reagan quote, saying “Machine guns are functionally illegal right now.”

The Texas senator added, “the machine gun has been functionally illegal for 80 years, you and I can’t purchase a machine gun.”

Sen. Cruz also fact checked the notion that an assault weapon ban would help reduce gun violence, noting that when America had an assault weapons ban, the ban did not have a “material” impact on gun violence.

“If we can agree the objective is to keep people safe,” then Congress should push for Grassley-Cruz, Sen. Cruz charged.

Guttenberg said he could support Grassley-Cruz if it does complete the objectives he laid out during the debate.

Sen. Cruz also added that many leading Democrats, including former Congressman Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), have called for national gun confiscation via a gun buyback program.

After the debate, Cruz said that his debate with Milano and Guttenberg was “productive and respectful” and that legislation such as Grassley-Cruz could help solve the problem of gun violence. watch

  1. Actually, Cruz is wrong. Machine guns/select fire weapons CAN be purchased by American citizens, you just have to fill out the forms and pay the tax, then you get your stamp and can buy the weapon. Same with suppressors.

  2. Here’s the “common sense” gun control argument:

“I’m scared of guns. I don’t really know anything about them, but
they’re scary. I watch them in the movies. I suppose that the
military might need them somewhere not in our country.

“I suppose cops might need a pistol with up to 6 shots. To shoot out
tires. Or protect me from murderers, rapists and crazy
fans/constituents. But otherwise guns are scary. I want
    them to go away.

“And I don’t believe in hunting. Maybe not even eating meat.”

  3. This all started off when Milano asked “…cite which passage of the Bible God states it is a god-given right to own a gun?” I’ve been waiting for a post here on this.
    Well Alyssa, here it is:
“He [Jesus] said to them, ‘But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.’ ” (Luke 22:36).
During Christ’s time on earth there were no guns, but a sword was the equivalent.
And if you weren’t aware, Jesus is the Son of God, you know…God eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  4. JMV: Cruz said they are “functionally” illegal now, which is true. It costs tens of thousands of dollars and you are put through intense scrutiny. Also, civilians cannot buy one that has been manufactured since 1986. So while it is technically possible for a civilian to buy a machine gun, in a practical sense it is all but impossible to do so.

  5. There is no such thing as gun violence. That phrase is an abomination of language. There are psychos using guns, just like there are violent people who use knives, bats, cars, and any other weapon they can get their hands on.

It’s not the weapon. The same weapon people love to say is for hunting can be used to kill people. The same car that takes your kids to the soccer game can be used to kill people. The same knife that cuts your steak can slice up a person. It’s not the weapon, it’s the user. There is no gun violence.

  6. They are both full of crap. Texas does allow the purchase of FULLY AUTOMATIC WEAPONS and California does not. Senator Cruz needs to read up on the laws in his home state and the National firearms Act. and Milano is full of more crap that an overstuffed Christmas goose.

  7. The only thing Milano could win is a wet t-shirt contest.

Cruz “schooling” her on the Constitution is like Wilt Chamberlain hanging from the rim against Sister Mary’s Orphanage for the Blind and Crippled elementary school basketball team.
