WATCH: This Is the California Dream of Public Transportation for All

A hidden gem of disturbing truth on the internet is the Street People of Los Angeles (SPOLA) account (Twitter and Instagram). It’s one of my favorite daily social media stops. Not because it’s particularly exciting or uplifting, but because it shows the raw, terrifying truth of what is happening on Los Angeles streets every day. Make no mistake, what is happening in Los Angeles is happening all over the state. -By Kira Davis

  1. Remember the Sim City game in the 90s? The key to ‘success’, i.e. making the city as large as possible, was to end up with all trains and no roads, skyscrapers and a few parks scattered around. It makes sense… if you care nothing about people actually living their lives enjoyably. I suppose the parks are supposed to fix everything.
I rode the Santa Monica bus in February from LAX to Santa Monica. Only costs $1. Fairly empty, and as many homeless people as fare-payers. Their policy is for the drivers to let people on even if they don’t pay, the risk is certainly not worth $1. I was comfortable but very alert, and ended up in conversation with a couple of homeless guys. Friendly conversation, but primarily as a defensive measure. Not sure I will take the bus next time.

  2. I simply REFUSE to log-in to Twaddle or Instacrap in order to view, by their estimation, not “appropriate” material. I guess that I’ll just have to use my over-active imagination…
