Whataburger Apologizes After Manager Refuses Service to Armed Detective

Breitbart Texas-Whataburger apologized after a police detective entered a Friendswood, Texas, location Thursday and was denied service.

KTRK reports that the Friendswood Police Department detective entered the Whataburger in plain clothes, carrying his gun on his hip with “a badge clearly visible next to it.”

Police said the detective spoke to the store manager to explain that he was law enforcement “but the manager didn’t budge.” The detective left the restaurant without being served.

On Friday, Whatatburger addressed news:

  1. Employee and the manager should building fire you immediately.

Free food to law enforcement for a month.
The latter action should be taken to recompense for their stupidity.

  2. Good advice for plainclothes officers: conceal your gun and badge. In fact, it’s policy in many departments. Too many people freak out when they see the gun, plus it just draws attention to yourself. I know because my department let us open carry, but a retired detective once took me aside and suggested that and I found it to be excellent advice.

  3. Whataburger has been in operating in Texas since 1950. The company has always been an asset for the communities it serves. I think it’s still family owned so I would expect that there will be actions taken by this well respected company. I would imagine that some manager is going to be reassigned to the reeducation camps.
After a long 16 hour plane ride returning from Iraq the first thing I wanted was a Whataburger and copious amounts of alcohol, though not necessarily in that order. It is my personal opinion they serve the best burgers in Texas. It’s a damn shame they can’t be nationwide, but then they probably wouldn’t be as good. Great food, fast service, clean stores and friendly staff. What more could you ask for now days?

  4. @moochoman: I tried Whataburger a few times many (many) years ago, but I found the mealy quality of their patties to be unappealing. I don’t know whether they were adding too much filler to the meat or what, but I didn’t like the way the patties crumbled into little pieces when I ate them. It wasn’t so much an issue of flavor as it was of texture, but it was very bothersome to me.

Now I realize they may have changed things in the last 20 or 30 years or so, but because Burger King is now available I haven’t needed to try them since then.

Who knows? – Maybe they’ve improved.

  5. Realizing that “chain restaurants” don’t pay huge salaries I’m still amazed at the stupidity that “managers” show in their decision making process.

Then on the other side of the coin the way our concealed carry law is written here in IL you can “print” or do a poor job on the concealment which shows the “stupid strongly” in some of those carrying. They don’t get the “concealed” part of the carry or they are actually making it obvious via “I’m mister macho.” These are the idiots that you probably should not be happy about being in your store, because they’re probably just as adept in their gun handling as their concealment. Thinking there’s a number of people that perhaps shouldn’t be carrying…

As Mr. White says, “You can’t fix stupid.”

  6. It is apparent that law enforcement personnel are not welcome at the “Whataburger” in that town; why would any copper go there after this episode? I have no doubt that the “food products” vended by the store will be “customized” for the police.

I’ve never had the pleasure of sampling their products, but regardless of the brand of fast food, I choose to pack my own lunch; that way I know what’s in it.
