What’s going on in Mexico?

AT: President Trump announced some new tariffs on Mexico.  This is from the AP:

In a surprise announcement that could derail a major trade deal, President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is slapping a 5% tariff on all Mexican imports, effective June 10, to pressure the country to do more to crack down on the surge of Central American migrants trying to cross the U.S. border.

He said the percentage will gradually increase — up to 25% — “until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied.”

The decision showed the administration going to new lengths, and looking for new levers, to pressure Mexico to take action — even if those risk upending other policy priorities, like the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trade deal that is the cornerstone of Trump’s legislative agenda and seen as beneficial to his reelection effort. It also risks further damaging the already strained relationship between the U.S. and Mexico, two countries whose economics are deeply intertwined.

Yes, I was surprised with President Trump’s decision.  At the same time, maybe President Trump knows that something is happening south of the border.

A few days ago, I had a conversation with a Mexican journalist.  I asked her a couple of questions:

  1. In hindsight, this makes sense. DJT has two stated priorities tied for first place: stop illegal aliens from crossing our southern border, and establish equitable trade deals with everyone but especially Mexico and Canada. Whacking the Mexicans with these heavy and rapidly rising tariffs makes it clear he sees stopping the illegal invasion as #1.

Most of the pundits and poo-bahs can’t see past next week, much less next month, quarter, or year. They talk about the tariffs in isolation and without the time element. They are stupid AND partisan.

  2. Why are they allowing it? You’ve got to be kidding. The cartels call the shots in Mexico and their hauling in billions from this migration.
    Stupid question.

  3. I’ve been to Mexico at a couple locations.
Go outside the tourist zones or industrial zones that are maintained by outside money and the rest of the country is a shithole.
Most of the average citizens I met are nice people. They are trapped in this mess. It’s the corrupt politicians and businesspeople (cartels) that that cause the blight of the world. Shipping the lowlifes here is the next phase of their leeching policies of sucking the life out of the average Joe (or Jorge) because they have already blead the rest of Latin America dry.

  4. Declare Mexico the 51st State, kill all the politicians and exterminate the cartels. Restore the tourist trade, oil business and agriculture business. There fixed it!

  5. Our country should insist that some of the hundreds of millions in dollars that we sent down there should be spent sending the Third World Shitholers back to the Shitholes from whence they came. If these Third World Shitholers make it across our porous border, they will never be deported from here. This would be a very popular use of the money we waste trying to help Mexico reform its own hopelessly corrupt society. Tax the remittances and build the damned MAGA Wall!

  6. Mexico’s government is bought and paid for by the cartels. This happened several decades ago. Mexican people understand that their government is doing the cartel’s bidding. What many have refused to understand is that they are now in positions of power within our own institutions. The Democrats are the party of the cartels.

  7. Being worried about Mexico’s part in the USMCA trade deal is just asinine. Everything about this (what Trump) is doing is in our favor.

If those who watch MSNBC, CNN, and the rest of the Fake News Media Complex tuned in tomorrow morning and they all told those people they were actually living in Canada, I think they’d believe them!

  8. The only reason Mexico isn’t another Venezuela is because of the money earned in the US and sent back to Mexico.I’d like to see a tax on the money that illegals send home. That would hurt Mexico the most.

  9. The good people of Mexico have been in desperation at least since the hangings of the K of C Catholics under the hard commie regime back in what, the 30s. They haven’t had a “Trump” president to clean up the mess since the Spaniards were in charge, and many of them were corrupt.

The visual message of Our Lady of Guadalupe only turned the hearts of the common man. Others kept to the message from the gods of human sacrifice.

    Pray for them.
