  1. Yes, everything is stupid, but it was not always so.

On this day in 1814, Francis Scott Key, while on board a British ship negotiating the release of a friend, witnessed the bombardment of Fort M’Henry. Despite a night-long assualt, come sunrise he witnessed a remarkable event, “And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.” After a day, the British were unable to destroy the fort and gave up. Key was relieved to see the American flag still flying over Fort McHenry and quickly penned a few lines in tribute to what he had witnessed.

The poem was later set to music and in 1931 became our national anthem.

  2. I made that allusion. I was on the ship at the time, and I said: “Damn, Scotty (he hated being called ‘Frank’), Look! Through the rockets red glare and those bursting bombs, we can still see the flag!”

The rest, as they say, is History!

  3. I just saw today why he wears the hoodies and covers his neck all the time. It looks like Stroke Shrek is about to hatch a homunculus out of the back of his neck. Seriously. What the heck IS that thing?
