Why Do Californians Have to Choose Between Food, Agriculture, and Fish?

CA Globe:

The long time political dispute between California farmers and state and federal water regulators predates the latest drought and will continue long after, unless some political honesty takes place.

Most of the media and public officials paint California farmers and ranchers as the biggest water wasters in the state. Yet California’s farmers and ranchers have made huge strides in improving efficient water management over the years — it’s in their best interest to do so, not only economically, but to save and conserve natural resources. Farmers and ranchers are some of the best, most efficient and effective conservationists California has.

Yet California farms and businesses are starved of water year after year. Lawmakers and federal environmental regulators annually authorize billion gallons of water to flow out to the ocean, instead of being used for human consumption.

This is environmental extremism at its worst, and it is killing California agriculture.

Currently, about 2 million acres, which is the equivalent of 1/4 of California’s irrigated farmland, is receiving only 5% of its water supply, according to Kristi Diener, third generation farmer and water expert. “North and South of Delta Central Valley Project farmers were told they would receive just 5%, and with crops already planted, that has now been changed to 0% until further notice. Other areas have had their supplies cut by 25% or more. 60,000 acres in Northern California (Klamath) won’t receive much, and could end up being 0% as well.” more here

  1. A better headline:
Why Do Californians Have to Choose Between Food, Agriculture, Fish, and Assassinating Their Progressive Politicians and Voters?

…Not that I’m suggesting anybody actually do any assassinating. No, no, no. Heaven forbid.

  2. Booth industries are vital to the Calif economy, but SOCAL suck up too much water from the north when they should build DESAL plants on the coast but they don’t want them on their beaches.

  3. @Brad — It’s surely about control today, but it started out being about tons and tons of money pouring (!) into the bank accounts of SOCAL land speculators, developers, and their corrupt state pol cronies.

  4. I live in a State that does not even border California, but we have to allow a large share of the water that originates on and flows through our land to be piped to California.
We generally see Californians as people who enjoy criticizing others for how they perceive our environmental stewardship, but are in reality terrible polluters and wasters of resources, including our water.

  5. “Lawmakers and federal environmental regulators annually authorize billion gallons of water to flow out to the ocean, instead of being used for human consumption.”

So you want the ocean to go dry for lack of enough water to keep it filled?

  6. Communist and fascist want Californians to be water deprived and energy deprived, so they can control them – and loot them. Hence, no new water projects in CA for decades; no new power projects, either. Just democrat looting the state.

  7. It’s said that during the last Ice Age cycle, southern California had no deserts. In between cycles, the place dries up. IMO, there’s a lot to be said about Handsome Sleuth’s comment.

  8. Does anybody remember that FedGov mandated that water has to flow down to the Sea of Cortez?

They had a HUGE celebration when some water got down there.

Two fedgov dyke bitches and about 3 Mesikin office drones.

You can look it up online. It came about as a result of Chris McCandles trying to paddle the Colorado river to the Sea of Cortez and running aground before he even hit the border.

So a bunch of lefty saps decided to honor his memory and put through legislation that required the Colorado to run all the way to the ocean.

    So there’s that.

  9. So the farmers only get 5% of their water; I wonder if all the golf courses are likewise limited to 5%? How about Barbara Streisand’s lawn? Gavin Newsome’s vinyards?

  10. When Castro cut off the water to Gitmo, LBJ set up a desalination plant in a matter of weeks. LA needs desalination, and to stop stealing water from California farmers.
