WI student sues poetry prof over lewd course materials, asks court to change ‘F’ to ‘A’

EAG:

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – A Wisconsin college student sued her poetry professor for a better grade after she received an F in alleged retaliation for her complaints about “lesbians, illicit sexual relationships, incest and frequent swearing” in the course material.

Donna Kikkert, 59, attended professor Patricia Dyjak’s Advanced Creative Writing Poetry course at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point during the 2014-15 school year, but was disappointed when assignments focused mostly on perverted sex topics and profanity, according to the lawsuit filed in Portage County Circuit Court.

Kikkert complained about the materials in an email to Dyjak and her boss, English Department chairman Michael Williams, and suggested that Dyjak include other topics, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

“The central component and thesis of the class has been that of a feminist focus, with an overemphasis on the sexual, gays and lesbians and, furthermore, poems which incorporate swearing and negativism to accentuate their point,” she wrote. “Perhaps consideration might be given to one or two of the texts consisting of those poets who are considered to be the classics (ie., Yeats, Frost, Poe, Dickinson, to name a few) – ‘raising the bar,’ as it were.”

Kikkert wrote in the lawsuit that “Dyjak choose five poetry textbooks … which focused on lesbians, illicit sexual relationships, incest and frequent swearing” and noted that “such choices were consistent with Ms. Dyjak’s frequent referral, during class periods, to the incestuous treatment she had received as a child and her dysfunctional relationship with her ex-husband.”

  1. At 59, adult student Kikkert is an informed consumer.
    Good for her.

I’m on campuses every now and then.
Academia was always a dodge. But now, 90% of faculty seem literally unfit for any adult occupation, least of all teaching.

  2. About eight to ten years ago I dumped a class in human sexuality at one of Purdue’s extensions. During first class students were subjected to breaking down inhibitions. We were divided into groups, and our group had to come up with slang terms for coitus. Other groups, other sexual words, etc.

I went home to look over the text, and realized it had zip to do with sexual psychology, and everything to do with honoring and promoting Margot Sanger and Kinsey, birth control, masturbation, pornography, abortion, etc. I decided that I could stay in the class, and come to class prepared to refute every page of the text and mess up my GPA, or withdraw from the class.

My mind was made up when I learned that we would, in the fourth class, be viewing two porn movies featuring senior pornography. The third class we would be subjected to two counselors from PP. That was the last straw. I did not go gracefully. I gave the young instructor a short book on Sanger and told her about Kinsey.

Somehow, though, I wonder if I was supposed to stay in that class and put fresh clean air and pure light on the class material.

  3. You mean there’s a professor who is taking out their own personal experiences on the class as revenge experience. Sorry, can’t believe a “PROFESSIONAL” would do such a thing.

Can only say as a person who was an undergraduate/graduate at 24, a master’s candidate at 40, and a Doctoral candidate at 50 that traditional formal education is not for older folks who are easily intimidated or shrinking violets. I consider my M. Div. from one of the most liberal seminaries on the east coast a degree in apologetics.

  4. Navel gazing philosophic academic endeavors have had a few thousand years to make an impact on the life of the average human. I don’t see it.

People are as crass, base, venal and hostile as when teachings in the ‘humanities’ was begun.

On the other hand, what teachers and students of the philosophic arts dismiss as crude and vulgar, I.E., technology, which requires from the students a certain discipline and rigor, has rid the world of lethal diseases, raised standards of living for billions, brought us muscle cars and (limited) space flight and made online banking possible.

  5. Plain Jane wrote, “Nope, didn’t shorten my name. Pinky hit “Post” accidently.”
Phew, we were afraid that you had decided to transition to the other sex. I believe it is all the rage now.

  6. NOW it’s time to “challenge yourself with ideas you may not necessarily be comfortable with”? Where was this in all the normal classes?

I actually took a Women’s Studies class back in the late 90s when college professors hadn’t collectively flaked out. Mine was team taught by a fanatic feminist/vegan/animal rights activist (adjunct) and a professor (tenured) who valued her job. I remember the tenure track professor stating that our journals are not meant to be “gut dumps,” openly disagreed (politely) with the freakazoid over a hygiene issue and stopped someone dead when they tried to carry on talking about the same sort of thing as described in the article. I don’t know how subsequent classes went but at least this one was tempered by someone who understood normalcy.
