You’ll Need Federal Government ‘Real ID’ if You Want to Fly in 2025

W J

It’s Dec. 31, and we’re all busy contemplating just what lies ahead in 2025. Some of the changes will be predictable. For instance, we will have a president who will know he’s president starting on Jan. 20.

Some of the changes, however, aren’t as heavily advertised as others — and one of them might not be as welcome as you’d like, particularly if you don’t have a so-called “Real ID.”

You’ve probably forgotten about the “Real ID.” Back in 2005 — four years after 9/11 — Congress passed an act requiring new federal standards for identification, both making the cards more secure and harder to obtain.

Real ID requirements were supposed to go into effect on May 11, 2008. For perspective, that’s the day when the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Iron Man,” completed its first weekend at the box office in No. 1, and people born on that date will be graduating high school in the next year or two.

And yet, Real ID still hasn’t been implemented due to the challenges inherent in switching over the system. That’ll change this coming May, as news service Nexstar noted in a Sunday article. more here

  1. In my case funny thing is I bet my background has been checked and investigated more than 99.9% of the general population. We’ll start with the carry permit. Small potatoes. Move on to ITAR clearance. Very large potatoes. and then move onto clearance for restricted military documents. AND I CAN’T FLY? Like Elon says, take a giant step backwards and fuck you in your own face. I’m kinda done with it all.

  2. HS I plan to never fly again, too. In fact, I haven’t been in a commercial airliner since long before the turn of the century.

I’ve traveled much in the US though, mostly in a big truck and a fair bit on a motorcycle.

  3. If anyone bothered to read the article, you might note that you more than likely already have this ID. Even supposedly backward hayseed states as TN have had it for years.

  5. Zonga,
states get around the REALID federal restrictions by issuing licenses that are ‘Not valid for Federal identification’. It’s the game they play to buck federal law.

  6. Real ID is a joke now since the dems started handing out drivers license to illegals as soon as they entered the country so that they could vote for the socialist democratic party. Some of those illegals are actually terrorists and now they have real id.

  7. In California I had to show my birth certificate and my wife had to show hers and a marriage license because she took my last name 37 years ago. I haven’t been on an airplane in 10 years, don’t plan to ever again.

  8. “Between the DEI in the aircraft manufacturing industry and the DEI in the air traffic control system, there’s no way I’ll ever get on a plane again.”

Don’t leave out DEI airplane mechanics.

  9. I’ve flown twice in the past 30 years to San Diego in 1996 prior to 9-11 to rescue at abortion clinics with Operation Rescue during the 96 Republican national convention and in Sept. 2013 to Virginia Beach when my oldest daughter was married. I don’t really plan on flying again unless it is absolutely necessary.

  10. Govt Bureaucrat: ID please.
    Me: Sure. Here’s my passport.
GB: I need a drivers license.
Me: No, you don’t. You asked for ID.
GB: I need an ID with your address.
Me: No, you don’t. You just need to know I am who I say I am.
GB: We use drivers license for ID.
Me: My passport is my ID.
GB: SHOW ME YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE.
Me: Check your regulations. All you need is my ID.
GB: You’re under arrest! Get down on the ground! NOW!
Me: I am on the ground. See my feet?
GB: *BLAM* *BLAM* *BLAM* (mag dump)

    This will not end well.

  11. An actual real example of the stupidity/insanity on display here is that the govt office where you have to go to pay traffic citation fines is in the secure part of the county courthouse. You need a driver license to get to in. But if you’ve been ticketed for driving without a license, you can’t get to the office to pay your fine without first going to the other office to get a license. Where’s the other office? Same place.

Can you say “Catch-22” boys and girls? I knew that you could.

  12. Everytime I enter or exit certain retail establishments I set off their theft detector.
This happens to the point where I consider it harassment.
Lately I would leave my wallet in my car and just take my debit card or cash and the alarms stopped going off.
The other day I left my wallet in vehicle, grabbed my debit card, cash and this time my Driver’s license.
    The alarms went off.
    WTF?

  13. @Jason, I have had mine renewed and there is a yellow circle w/ white star center.
You should be good to go.

@Just Saying, good to know the terrorists will have equal access to my next flight 😬

  14. @geoff:

Uncle Al, Catch-22 is the governments modus operandi.

Ain’t that the truth. And it HAS been the truth since before Yossarian got to Pianosa. And everybody has a share!

  15. I went to vote here in Texas a few years ago and showed them my CCP for ID. The guy went totally ape shit and told me I had to show my driver’s license. I told him he was wrong, all I needed was (according to State Law) a state issued ID. The CCP is literally identical to my DL… even has the same photo and the DL number on it. He insisted on seeing my driver’s license anyway. The line behind me was getting long so I let him have his way. Sure would like to run into him some day.

  16. Remember when we could just walk into an airport and board your flight? That was the free world. We gotta get back to living in freedom. The security state doesn’t make me feel safe at all.
