Palm Sunday attacks: Bombings at churches in Egypt leave at least 37 dead

At least 37 people were killed and more than 100 injured in two separate Palm Sunday bombing attacks at Coptic Christian churches in Egypt.

The first blast happened at a church in the Nile Delta town of Tanta, where at least 26 people were killed and 71 others wounded, officials said.

Television footage showed the inside of the church, where a large number of people gathered around what appeared to be lifeless, bloody bodies covered with papers.

A second attack was later reported in Alexandria, leaving at least 11 dead, and 35 injured.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, which come a week before Christians worldwide will celebrate Easter.

“Either a bomb was planted or someone blew himself up,” provincial governor Ahmad Deif told the state-run Nile TV channel, Sky News reported.

The attack in Tanta was the latest in a series of assaults on Egypt’s Christian minority, which makes up around 10 percent of the population and has been repeatedly targeted by Islamic extremists.

The attacks came just weeks before Pope Francis is due to visit Egypt.

Grand Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, head of Egypt’s Al-Azhar — the leading center of learning in Sunni Islam — condemned the attack, calling it a “despicable terrorist bombing that targeted the lives of innocents.”

A local Islamic State affiliate claimed a suicide bombing at a church in Cairo in December that killed around 30 people, mostly women, as well as a string of killings in the restive Sinai Peninsula that caused hundreds of Christians to flee to safer areas of the country. The group has threatened further attacks.

A militant group called Liwa al-Thawra claimed responsibility for an April 1 bomb attack targeting a police training center in Tanta, which wounded 16 people. The group, believed to be linked to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood,has mainly targeted security forces and distanced itself from attacks on Christians.

  2. We’ve allowed muslim refugees by the 100’s of thousands and a small handful of Christians.

    Muslims should be denied entry, let them be governed by the laws and the murdering heathens they pray to in their own country.

  5. When, not if, they light off a nuke in Phoenix or Berlin, or a dirty bomb, or some gas, or a biological agent that kills hundreds of thousands; all those ‘innocent Muslims’ are going to wish they had led the charge to stop their religious hillbilly cousins.
    Mainly to stop the public lynchings, and the mass deportations, and the vengeance visited upon them by those who have had enough.

    I think soon enough Germany is going to end up rounding up muslims and putting them into camps for deportation. They’ll be good at it. They know all about camps, don’t they? It didn’t have to be this way, Merkel. You could have sent them back. We all could have sent them back.

    Muslims do not condemn this.. ANY OF THEM. If they do they are not authentic or devout Muslims.
    All “real” Muslims either openly or secretly applaud this. It’s what Muhammad commands.
    It’s what they believe Allah commands them to do – wipe out all infidels and conquer the world.

  11. The ONLY refugees we should be taking in are the Christians stuck in that hellhole of the Middle East. Not only are they the ones being targeted, their so-called “moderate Muslim” neighbors don’t give a crap that they’re targeted.

    Personally, I think President Trump should just disregard the Leftist judges and follow through with the travel ban anyway. The ruling is unconstitutional and violates the law. He has no reason to follow it.

  12. Another attack here domestically is just a matter of time. When that happens Trump needs to call these so called judges out by name. And if the terrorists the do the deed are recent arrivals those judges should be charged as complicent

  15. DEATH TO ISLAM! That is the only way to stop this. As BFH said all muslims want us dead. They are taught this from childhood. Damn liberals seem to care less about America. We need to line them up with the muslims. 😡

    Show compassion for the victims of Uncle Ernie’s diddling. But only a truly evil person puts Uncle Ernie’s victim in charge of the scouts’ weekend camping trips. And only a truly insane person puts Uncle Ernie’s victim in charge of the scouts’ camping trips, because “Being diddled by Uncle Ernie makes him the best qualified.”

    Importing people who think, who have to think as they are still alive, that the type of behavior engaged in in much of the “third world” is not only acceptable, but actually a good life plan, to continue their lives, as they choose to live them, amongst your neighbors, is no different than shooting at those neighbors.

    It isn’t hard to predict. It’s already been tested experimentally. If you deny your own lying eyes, then who am I to disagree?
