Family members say a Massachusetts teen has died after eating an extremely spicy tortilla chip featured in the viral “One Chip Challenge.” A classmate gave the Paqui-branded chip to 14-year-old Harris Wolobah at Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester before the boy went to the school nurse complaining of stomach pains, Harris’ mother, Lois Wolobah, tells WBTS. The school called Harris’ mother, who picked him up. The boy started feeling better at home but fell unconscious while getting ready to head to a basketball team tryout, Lois Wolobah says. Police responded around 4:30pm Friday and found he wasn’t breathing, per Spectrum News 1. He was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.
A cause of death has not been determined as an autopsy is pending. But Lois Wolobah says the family believes the tortilla chip contributed to her son’s death, per WBTS. The chip—sold in a coffin-shaped container—is made from the world’s spiciest peppers. The 2023 version is derived from the Carolina Reaper (1.7 million Scoville Heat Units, compared to 2,500-8,000 SHU for a jalapeno) and Naga Viper (1.4 million SHU) peppers. Late last year, paramedics responded to a Georgia high school and treated a boy who’d eaten one of the chips, per KIRO. Local police then issued a warning, citing medical professionals as saying the chip can trigger severe coughing, vomiting, and more serious issues, including “esophageal damage, chest pain, heart palpitations, and even heart attacks.”
Play stupid games.

Wow! I don’t even like Tacobell mild hot sauce.
That’s a spicy meatball!
“2,500-8,000 SHU for a jalapeno”
But if they’re pickled, they’re a hot-sweet-sour and oooohhh so good!
A couple years back, a buddy of mine sent me a spicy beef jerky challenge. It was Carolina Reaper Beef Jerky. Being the pepper head that I am, I proceeded with caution, as I know the risks. So I cut off a 1/4 to 1/2 inch square to kinda dip my toe in the water, if you will. I’m glad I did. End result, it was hotter than shit and even puked a little in my mouth….but never a full blown vomit. Anyway, people need to realize that you just can’t dive in head first with this stuff. It’s not to be trifled with.
I used to love eating really spicy food, but my body’s too old to deal with the next day. I still have some scorpion peppers in the freezer.
Almost had one of those chips as well.
I love Jalapenos on Pizza….That’s as Hot as I wanna go…
I have some Ghost Pepper Sauce on the shelf….for nigh on 5 Years..Too HOT!!!!
@FullMetal
Those little buggers pack quite a punch. Tabasco puts out a Scorpion sauce that’s damn good. Excellent on a BBQ Beef sammich.
Give the kid an award, he did the challenge, it’s okay that it didn’t work out in the end, at least he gave it his best shot. His tombstone should read “He died trying.” Oh, and he won’t ever be breeding.
I wonder how long before another kid at the school does a Tik Tok challenge?
No doubt that fuker burned its way thru his guts and left a smokin exit wound the size of a fist!!
Oldest son bought 4 chips and set me and his brothers up for the challenge on #2’s B-day last year.
The challenge? 5 minutes without drinking water, or whatever.
Two hours later we joked the whole family was going to be found dead from dehydration because no one was giving in.
3 hours later we let #2 son win because it was his B-day. It was just a matter of who is going the longest without liquids. The pepper had long worn off, but the first couple of minutes or so was pretty entertaining.
My boys and I must be real Texicans, Pass the hot sauce, please, and don’t give me any of that nasty, weak, Louisiana hot sauce
The only strategy I used was to not let the chip touch my lips. I got confirmation it was a decent strategy when all the boys were commenting on how much their lips were affected.
I made the mistake of fake eating it when we started and put it down the front of my shirt next to my skin. They saw me. It was just a joke, but boy howdy I was surprised when my sweat activated it later that evening. I had red irritation straight down my front because the sweat carried it. It took a few days to go away.
Anybody remember Here’s tablets?
Jetex motors are powered by a solid pellet consisting mainly of guanidine nitrate, which burns to release an exhaust gas in large volume, leaving little solid residue. Thrust developed is modest and sustained, making it suitable for aerodynamically lifted flying models
Edit: Not Here’sz… damn autocorrect changed Jetex to Here’s for whatever illogical reason!!
I read somewhere that the enjoyment of extremely spicy foods is due to an adrenaline reaction. Makes sense considering the manufacturers warning of chest pains. When people are evaluated for cardiac disease, they are given a stress test. This chip is a cheap substitute for a stress test and the boy likely had an undiagnosed cardiac condition that flared after the chip. What an awful meaningless way to find out. Like a child who dies of a previously undiagnosed heart condition on their first roller coaster ride.
My first thought was: “Did he get the jab and boosters?”
More than likely another Big Pharma/Gates/Soros/Fauci success than a chip.
