  1. Must be a real Texan and not a transplant.

It was amazing to watch the birth of my last two sons at Parkland in Dallas. When they came out with a pistol in each hand the hospital staff told me it was normal here.

I knew the extra iron supplements were worth it at that moment.

  2. He probably trains his working horses to gunfire using a one-handed grip so they don’t shy and bolt at the noise while he holds the reigns. I used to practice at 100 yards with 230gr ball and a 1911 using both hands, it’s doable.

But making it come together at the moment of truth is the intersection of preparation and luck.

In any case, one hand first round stop at 312 feet in low light at a heavily armed active shooter is freaking awesome.

  3. I wouldn’t try that shot with my 1911 which is comparable to a .40 but it’s certainly doable with my Ruger Vaquero, .45 Long Colt which I practice with at 50 yards and consistently put 12 out of 12 rounds through the head of a police silhouette. Doing it at the range is one thing but what this cop did is quite remarkable! Hat’s off to him…

  4. Wow! Two things for the anti-gun crowd to get all upset about. One, he shot someone with a gun. Two, he gave thanks to God. I say: God bless him and all those who hold the thin blue line with guns and God at their side.

  5. Freaking astounding! That said, no one ever rises to the occasion, they fall to their level of training. This man has some serious range time under his belt. Gotta love that Smith & Wesson M&P. I’m happy! Think I’ll go buy some ammo.

  6. J Frank & Sig 94 nailed it.

Back when I had decent eyesight I used to shoot metal silhouette targets at similar ranges offhand, but doing it under real world crisis conditions is phenomenal.

Double ditto to what Sig 94 said…God makes those shots.

  7. One thing to consider though…if he had missed and hit the wrong target, he wouldn’t be a hero today, he’d be the goat. Tough call some times. I’m just real glad it worked out.

  8. In 1975, I was at the shooting range at RAF Lakenheath taking my yearly qualifying practice. Upon retrieving the targets, a range officer blurted out my name and told me to come to him. He asked me where I was from and I told him Texas. He looked at the other range officer and said, “You owe me five bucks”. One bet I was from Texas and the other bet I was from Arkansas. They said the best shooters always came from these two places. I earned my marksmanship medal that day.
