I would make that shot only in my dreams. Glad this guy did! Man, that would just make your day.
Must be a real Texan and not a transplant.
It was amazing to watch the birth of my last two sons at Parkland in Dallas. When they came out with a pistol in each hand the hospital staff told me it was normal here.
I knew the extra iron supplements were worth it at that moment.
@ Dad- Great little anecdote.
He probably trains his working horses to gunfire using a one-handed grip so they don’t shy and bolt at the noise while he holds the reigns. I used to practice at 100 yards with 230gr ball and a 1911 using both hands, it’s doable.
But making it come together at the moment of truth is the intersection of preparation and luck.
In any case, one hand first round stop at 312 feet in low light at a heavily armed active shooter is freaking awesome.
@ Boobie, Glad I could give a smile, thanks.
This story gives me Clint Eastwood western flashbacks.
I keep hearing the sound track from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly in my mind.
Off hand, 100 yards, low light, your heart pounding…
God makes those shots.
Great shot. No waste of ammo there. Saved the taxpayers a bundle, after you add up what it would have cost if he had only winged him.
Wow.
I’d put this guy in the same category as Captain Sullenberger, who landed a jumbo jet in the Hudson River in 2009, or the guy who landed a much smaller plane on the Major Deegan Expressway earlier this year.
These “feel good” stories always bring a tear to the eye.
Just wanna say “Awwwwww …”
I wouldn’t try that shot with my 1911 which is comparable to a .40 but it’s certainly doable with my Ruger Vaquero, .45 Long Colt which I practice with at 50 yards and consistently put 12 out of 12 rounds through the head of a police silhouette. Doing it at the range is one thing but what this cop did is quite remarkable! Hat’s off to him…
He deserves a bitchin nickname
Chuck Norris is soo jealous…
Okay, so what did the perp do wrong?
Gives new meaning to “Hold your horses”.
Wow! Two things for the anti-gun crowd to get all upset about. One, he shot someone with a gun. Two, he gave thanks to God. I say: God bless him and all those who hold the thin blue line with guns and God at their side.
Freaking astounding! That said, no one ever rises to the occasion, they fall to their level of training. This man has some serious range time under his belt. Gotta love that Smith & Wesson M&P. I’m happy! Think I’ll go buy some ammo.
Holy Cow! I had not read of this. Awesome shot.
J Frank & Sig 94 nailed it.
Back when I had decent eyesight I used to shoot metal silhouette targets at similar ranges offhand, but doing it under real world crisis conditions is phenomenal.
Double ditto to what Sig 94 said…God makes those shots.
Great shot.
Check this out- Hickock45 ringing the gong at 230 YARDS, standing freehand with iron sights lol 😀

One thing to consider though…if he had missed and hit the wrong target, he wouldn’t be a hero today, he’d be the goat. Tough call some times. I’m just real glad it worked out.
In 1975, I was at the shooting range at RAF Lakenheath taking my yearly qualifying practice. Upon retrieving the targets, a range officer blurted out my name and told me to come to him. He asked me where I was from and I told him Texas. He looked at the other range officer and said, “You owe me five bucks”. One bet I was from Texas and the other bet I was from Arkansas. They said the best shooters always came from these two places. I earned my marksmanship medal that day.
