With the Western Front in stalemate in 1916, the German High Command decided the best strategy was to bleed the other side into collapse.
They choose the fortified town of Verdun, a locale that the French would have to defend for pride and Paris.
10 months and nearly a million casualties later, both sides where exhausted.
What the British at the Somme is to war’s futility, Verdun is to outright slaughter.
A battle that resulted in more lives lost than anyone today knows about. This is a fact that should be known to all but sadly our “Education” system does not provide this information. It is also indicative of the slaughter of the twentieth century and the ignorance of the twenty-first century.
kinda makes me think of a million muslim whacko’s
caught in between barbed wire barriers ..
Been there. There are German graveyards with thousands of BLACK headstones all around the area. Verdun is in Lorraine which was part of Germany off and on.
Been there, Verdun that?
Sorry. Can’t help myself sometimes. That had to have been a sobering experience. May such slaughter never be repeated, although I suspect that in one way or another, someday it will.
Took 10 months to cause 1 Million casualties.
We can do that now in 10 seconds.
(not counting flight time)
So can Iran, by the way … thanks to Obola and Kerry …
“The Price of Glory” is an excellent book by Alistair Horne, and on the top of the Amazon list of books about Verdun. It is so good I’ve read it a couple of times.
