122 Ice Fisherman Rescued Off of Upper Red Lake Last Night

At approximately 4:57 p.m. Beltrami County Emergency was notified about 100 or more fishermen stranded on an ice floe on Upper Red Lake [Minnesota]. Initial reports indicated that the ice had separated creating a 30-foot gap from the floe to the main shoreline. 

Before emergency assistance arrived bystanders attempted a canoe rescue. Four people fell into open water and were brought back to the ice floe to warm up in a fishing shelter. More

There have already been a few drownings this December in Northern Minnesota and ice fisherman are being warned to get their shacks off the ice until it thickens up. Here and Here

  1. Almost never go out on the ice until after New Years Day, with ice fishing shacks later. There used to ne common sense “up Nort'” but not so much any more apparently.

  2. Ice fishing? Is ice good eating? What’s the best way to prepare it, pan fry, planked, poached? Or I suppose one could slice it up and eat it it raw, Japanese style. We could call that slushimi.
