Why did I keep thinking of Jeff Foxworthy?
When Flannery O’Connor was asked why Southern writers write about freaks, she responded that Southerners were still able to recognize them.
Sadly, America has un-learned the instinct for survival – we no longer recognize freaks, communists, socialists, izlamists, illegal invading foreign rat-people, or any of the other myriad dangers to our tenuous civilization.
I love reading Flannery O’Connor’s short stories especially A Good Man Is Hard To Find etc. Also I like Walker Percy’s writing, another great Southern author who wrote Love In The Ruins, The Thanatos Syndrome etc.
Geoff, O’Connor is a great one. I have found Walter Wangerin Jr. a good one too… Miz Lil and the Chronicles of Grace and Ragman are permanent additions to my library. Mourning into Dancing is going to be there too when I finish it. May God bless.

I haven’t read any Walter Wangerin yet, I’m going to have to look into that. Another good author is a Catholic Canadian named Michael D. O’Brien who wrote Sophia House, (Sophia House is about a Polish man who rescues a young Jewish man and saves him from the Nazi’s set in Warsaw during World War 2), The Father’s Tale etc. The Father’s tale is a very long book well over 1000 pages but worth reading. It’s a modern day retelling of The Prodigal Son and The Good Samaritan.
