Rescue workers combed the rubble of an historic Pennsylvania chocolate factory early Saturday after an overnight explosion at the plant left at least two people dead and several others missing.
One person was found alive in the debris after the massive explosion Friday night leveled the R. M. Palmer Co. headquarters in West Reading, NBC Philadelphia reported.
Eight others were taken to Reading Hospital, where two were admitted in “fair” condition and one was transferred. The others will be discharged, according to the hospital.
NBC Philadelphia reported that there was a “discrepancy” over exactly how many people died or are still unaccounted for following the explosion.
An early morning report from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency indicated that five people had died and six were missing, but at a press conference Saturday morning, West Reading’s mayor, Samantha Kaag, said “that is not accurate.”
She would not elaborate on why there might be a discrepancy. MORE
If all you’ve got are bags of pieces (with some missing), it isn’t always easy to get a body count. If you’ve got three eyeballs (all brown) you have at least two dead but possibly three.
I can understand why someone wouldn’t want to stand in front of cameras and mics and explain that sort of awful thing.
