A custodian of a Sufi shrine in Pakistan reportedly killed 20 fellow members of the Muslim sect with the help of five accomplices yesterday. Apparently, the perpetrator (and other practitioners) would travel to this shrine twice a week for “beating and torturing with a red hot iron rod” as a form of ritual cleansing.
The custodian, Abdul Waheed, confessed to police that he decided to kill “the people because they had tried to kill him by poisoning him in the past, and again they were there to kill him.”
I know Sufi’s do the Whirling Dervish as part of their practice, but this beating and branding for cleansing the spirit is new to me. Murdering each other however, is as old as the Muslim religion itself.
The Sufi live in a very bad part of town
