40th Anniversary of “The Play”

November 20th, 1982.

(With the funniest screencap ever)

The trombonist framed his crushed trombone. That just cracks me up.

  1. I was there!!!
Well, I was a freshman at Cal, but I didn’t get a ticket so I listened on the radio. Game was pretty dull until 4th quarter. Stanfurd behind by 2 with less than a minute to go, 4th and 18 at their own 20. Elway got the 1st down, they drove to the Cal 25 yard line, and called a time out with 8 seconds on the clock. I thought ‘Why didn’t they run it down to 3 or 4 seconds, so the clock would run out?’ Like it would matter…
I watched the replay that night, stayed up until 2 am to see the exciting conclusion.

  2. I did go to the Big Game the following year, at Stanfurd. Not very exciting but Cal won. At halftime the Stanfurd band made a big arrow pointing at Gary Tyrell, the trombone player – and the goat of 1982. 🙂

  3. Every time I see the football scene on Forrest Gump I recall that game. I just can’t believe it’s been 40 years since I watch it happen…Damn that makes me feel really old. I need a WAY BACK MACHINE!
