U.S. Army Quartet
Pentatonix
Gaither Vocal Band
Going in I really wanted to go for the Army Quartet. However, I don’t think they were mixed well. I think their rendition was similar to the Gaither Vocal Bandks, but the Army tenor was too out front and strayed too far from the melody. If he had been toned down a bit in the mix I think it would have blended in much better.
I’m feeling it today. Everyone gets an up-vote.
I enjoyed them all, but the Star Spangled Banner has a bit of a complicated melody and the Gaither Vocal Band played it simpler yet extremely well.
I agree with every word RadioMattM wrote. Am I allowed to do that?
Saved the best for last. I cringed at first seeing it was the national anthem knowing how every modern vocal group has to treat it like a jazz improvisation contest, but all three groups showed proper restraint.
On the 4th of July, they all get a thumbs up from me. Sandi Patty does an absolutely astounding version (no harmonies) at the 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial –

I agree Dr. Tar but the Gather Vocal Band kept the most truth and tradition to the melody.
Two different subgenres. It’s like comparing John Denver to the Temptations. So vote here: I like both.
My vote is for the song…. not who sings it. They were all good. At least there wasn’t anyone butchering it.
I guess my first comment isn’t going to make it out of limbo because of the link to Sandi Patty singing at the 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial. I gotta vote for any and all renditions of the National Anthem on the 4th of July.
I’m turning into a Democrat, I voted twice, Army then Gaither. Earlier I voted Seven Bridges Road, but Flowers on the Wall has been my ear bug all week.
Gaither Vocal Band by miles the best. Harmonies are fantastic! Beautiful!
Happy Independence Day!
