Hikers can now cross the Europaweg (Europe Bridge) which connects Grächen and Zermatt and measures nearly 500m.
Zermatt Tourist Board says it is the longest in the world, hanging at a heady 85m above the Grabengufer ravine, although a 405m bridge in Reutte, Austria hangs 110m higher.
The Europaweg replaces another bridge which was closed in 2010 after it was damaged by falling rocks.
Before the new bridge was opened hikers had to detour around the valley on a two-day hiking route in southern Switzerland.

Two Days is Huge When Your’e Trekking, it’s the Difference of Achieving Your Goal or Not. Espescialy in Winter !
Not a chance in hell could you get me near that!
Meant to say “Could Be the Difference” , I Don’t Know How Far they are Going !
I bet that’s going to be a fun walk when the wind starts blowing and the bridge starts twisting.
I’d like to give it a go on a unicycle.
Umm…no, no, NO thank you!
Years ago, I did conquer my ‘fear of heights’ enough to climb an A-frame ladder, then the extension, to sway back and forth 30 feet above the stage while retouching scenery.
55 meters equals approx. 185 feet or so, and the sway would be much greater than that which I experienced in the A- frame.
Sooo, count me out…even though I COULD walk across without a cane now that I’ve had a hip replacement. (Getting older just ain’t what it’s cracked up to be!)….
How wide it it? To me it looks too narrow for two way traffic – do you get to Friar Tuck with people walking the other way?
I see an AMAZING RACE challenge coming up.
What the toll for this bridge?
Rickety????
That’s nicest suspension footbridge I’ve ever seen.
Yeah, but it’s missing it’s troll.
I hear Maxine Waters is available.
absolutely no way this could ever be cost effective
In case of Thuggee, always bring a machete, and wrap your legs and arms around the ropes. . .
