The IRS commissioner on Tuesday brushed aside GOP proposals to abolish his agency, insisting the U.S. would have to have a tax collector one way or another.
“You can call them something other than the IRS if that made you feel better,” the agency’s chief, John Koskinen, said after a speech at the National Press Club. ( More at The Hill )

There will always been a need for a revenue service. A modern architecture should mean less people, a simplified tax code, and without a bureaucracy that has been proven to be used for political ends.
As Milton Friedman has noted, prior to WWII you had to pay your taxes to the government rather than having them withheld. I’m sure a return to the prior process could be accomplished.

Elect me president. On February 1, 2017 I give pink slips to 50% of all IRS personnel. On February 15, 2017 I give pink slips to 50% of those remaining. And every two weeks I give pink slips to 50% of the remaining IRS scumbags until only the commissioner and an administrative assistant remain. Then the assistant gets a pink slip.
The president can’t abolish the IRS; only congress can do that. But that doesn’t mean the president has to employ more than one person in the department.
This will serve two outcomes. It will tell the Gestapo that they are NOT in charge of anything. It will force congress to repeal the 16th amendment and pass the FairTax because there isn’t anyone around to enforce the thumbscrew and strong-arm tactics of socialist income tax collection.

Koskinen is always battling for the top spot on my “most punchable face” list.
A flat tax where everybody pays so that everyone has skin in the game. Do the same on the corporate side then start the process to cut the IRS to 5% of it’s current staff load. Accomplish that in 4 years and the IRS will cease to be a political weapon.
Shrink the Government to 10% of what it is today, eliminating the IRS will go far, and a consumption tax both Corporate and individual. No need for the IRS if you collect the tax at the purchase.
