Arctic sea ice much more resilient than previously thought

A single cool summer briefly reversed the decline in the ice cap around the North Pole, says new study.

Reviewing new satellite data, researchers at University College London found that the total volume of sea ice in the Northern Hemisphere was well above average in the autumn of 2013.

The volume of Arctic sea ice increased by more than a third after the summer of 2013 as the unusually cool air temperatures prevented the ice from melting, according to the UCL and University of Leeds scientists.
