25 Comments on Friday Night Deejay – Meerkat Brzezinski
Here’s some background:
Track 1: Sir Bob Geldof, former lead to the Boomtown Rats was knighted after creating & organizing the Live Aid concert back in the mid 80’s. I love the sarcasm on this track.
2. Mic Christopher didn’t even release his first album before drinking too much and falling on a set of steps leading to his death at a very young age.
3. The Frames lead singer, Glen Hansard, wrote the music for the Oscar winning movie & Tony Award winning Broadway musical, “Once”. The music was written long before the screenplay was even conceived and was part of The Frames band’s catalogue. This song makes me think of the strife between the Republican establishment and the conservative base.
4. U2, The most over-rated band in Ireland. Like Ireland’s Bruce Springsteen. But I wanted to include the song “40” and it included the other one also (I guess I go 7 songs). “I will sing a new song” is repeated very frequently in Psalms. And “40” refers to Psalm 40.
5. Jason Molina, the original writer/performer of the song was befriended by Glen Hansard after Hansard had picked up his tape at a local music store while touring the US with The Frames. Hansard bought the tape because he liked the artwork on the case. He wrote to Molina based on the small-type address on the tape. Molina responded. They formed a friendship. Irioncally, Molina was not known to make friendships and was estranged from much of his family. Molina drank himself to death at a young age.
6. Is there a bagpiper that does not know how to play Amazing Grace?
Oh and by the way, there is a theme here. They are all Irish performers.
Very nice. Thanks kindly. BFH – Love your experiment.
Thanks MB!
You are so welcome! And let me say also regarding the comment from “All too Much, Loving BFH’s experiment: It has been great for me. I have discovered so much beautiful music through both the posts and following the artists posted.
I tried to place some music that was not in the mainstream, but music that I like and listen to in that spirit. If we can stay in that spirit, I think that BFH has done well. I thank him as well!

Thanks MB. I haven’t thought about The Frames in ages. I confess a secret addiction to bagpipes.
Forgot to say the one and only thing about Bill Moyers I can take is a show he did in 1990 all about ‘Amazing Grace’. The entire show is probably on youtube. The origin and many different ways to sing it.
Hey no offense regarding the bagpipes, but that was one of two instruments I wouldn’t let my last child play. The other was the drums.
She ended up playing the accordion, being the rebel she secretly is!
Thanks, I am looking forward to future DJ’s…Cardigan?
and the purpose of all of this is .. ??
and the purpose of entertainment.. Bob?? Hello?
Bob, the purpose of all this is to piss you off. Now unplug your computer, and turn your tv back to Fox News. Just go back to your happy place.
HeyZeus, and I thought I was a contrary misanthrope !
The purpose?
It’s to give the readers a chance to express their personality beyond the politics.
I know I don’t like to be seen as one-dimensional, I have to think the readers feel the same way about themselves. (And after awhile their can be political overload.)
When I read the comments I see people communicating with each other off-topic. And a lot of it is about books, movies, music. So there is a yearning to not be steeped in politics 24/7.
On any given day, in combination with the Bullpen, iOTW authors 50 news stories. (That is a lot.) I think there’s room for a breather, and the breather isn’t supplanting what we normally provide.
(I suspended the reader submitted “soothiness/smoothiness” posts.
This is a turbo-charged version of that.)
I liked Bob’s question.
It gives me a chance every once in awhile to actually talk out loud about iOTW philosophy.
The greatest compliment I ever received about blogging wasn’t really meant as a compliment.
It was Pamela Geller. She said, “it’s like you want to be the Ernie Kovacs of blogging.’
I found that hilarious, and way too true.
She said it in reference to the “comment sidebar” game I invented.
I don’t know how many people remember that, or how many new readers weren’t around then.
Someone just sent me a screen shot of a comment they made in tribute to the game.
I might resurrect it for old times sake.
I guess this falls under the “I never heard of him” – type comment for me. A tad bit annoying. Like, “You people are laughing, but I see no fun here.”
But “the Ernie Kovacs of blogging” from Geller is great! I love the way you mix it up on this site. IOTW is never stale. There is always something changing, growing, or just being experimented. It’s always worth returning to.
i’ll turn off my computer guys, if you insist. i normally hate guys
with ponytails & earings so .. it puts a nasty little edge in my voice. ..
and please .. i don’t watch fox .. please spare me that label.
That was a great lineup Meerkat!
Bob Geldof video was a gas. And I really liked Hold On Magnolia. Good stuff!
Makes me wonder if maybe some of my ancestors might have jammed with some of your ancestors back in the old country.
The denizens of most sites wouldn’t even start to understand the Kovacs comment.
He was married to Edie Adams, wowza.
I was talking to a co-worker about music and instruments.
She proudly proclaimed her husband played the bagpipes, “…really well too.”.
Asked her how she knew.
Loved it! I love this experiment, great way to start the day!
Tomorrow they’ll be another deejay and they’ll spin some songs and you may love it or hate it even more.
Most people come here because they share the same political point of view. I think it’s fun to see how much one can have in common in a huge portion of one’s life (political worldview) and then be completely different when it comes to musical taste, or entertainment in general.
Bob, please send in a play list of your own! Everyone is welcome and (like what BFH said) we all like some different stuff. And it’s always fun to try listening to something unfamiliar.
it’s OK ..I’m fine with it all. I love browsing the site & what ever goes on that’s fine with me. no special worries or
needs do i have. i did not mean to get everyone’s dander up on this. please don’t concern yourself with any perceived
problems, OK .. i just wish I had lots O’ money to give to all the super fine blogs.
I mean.. one used to pay for Time, USWN&R , New Yorker cost a fortune for lefty garbadge. next month looks like IOTW time . the site is one of the coolest places. I used to be a moderator on the EDL forum & I posted tons of IOTW stuff there. OK so no problems or special treatments need here ..
