The Hiding Place Question

A survey taken as part of a publicity campaign for the movie “Return to the Hiding Place” discovered something about the character of the modern American when asked a very specific question.

Think back to World War II when Jews in Europe were forced into concentration camps and many were killed by the Nazis. If you were living in this time period, would you have risked the possible imprisonment and death of yourself and your family to hide Jews?”

This past July the Poles added the basement of a farm house outside of Warsaw as a national heritage site.

  1. Kill off the Evil in a timely manner, and it will be unnecessary to shelter the innocent.
Evil has a way of sneaking in and taking root before it is noticed.
We will find it very difficult to uproot

  2. The following story takes place in 1950.

After many years, a Catholic Frenchman goes to confession and tells the Priest, “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned”. The Priest asks what he has done, and the man says, “I hid a Jew in my attic during the German occupation”. The Priest responds, “But that is not a sin, my son – that is an act of great kindness and bravery.” The man says, “No, Father, the sin is that I did not do it out of compassion. I did it because the Jew was very rich and was willing to pay me two thousand francs a month to hide him.” The Priest thinks about this for a moment, then says, “Well, the goodness of the action far outweighs the fact that you did it out of greed. You are forgiven without penance. Go in peace, with God’s blessing.”

The man hesitates, then asks, “One more thing, Father.”

The Priest replies, “Yes, my son?”.

The man says, “Do I have to tell him the war’s over?”

  3. Remember the scene from the film “Inglourious Basterds”? It depicted this exact situation, with the Nazi’s killing everyone in the house except the young girl who would later kill the officer who gave the order to kill her family.
    Yes – I would.

  4. Southerners were more likely to say yes than were those from the Northeast.

Hmmm. So conservatives are more likely than liberals to hide Jews from the liberal left-wing National SOCIALISTS. And you know why. Because liberals hate the JOOOOZ too.

And yes, I would hide Jews from the National SOCIALISTS. Remember the thread a few days ago about the football player that stood up for the blind kid getting beaten? Yeah, it’s like that. There are those that are too weak and are incapable of protecting themselves. Pacifism is immoral.

  5. OK, here’s the truth: As with many questions such as this, a lot would depend on the circumstances, BUT – unless you were in that situation, confronted with the fear of DEATH, not only for yourself but for your whole family, you don’t know WHAT you would do. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.
