  1. What a cute kid!
Seems that bass should have been a bit livelier though. Maybe she played it to exhaustion, like Hemingway with a huge Marlin.

I still remember my first Zebco outfit, acquired around 1967 with Blue Chip Stamps!

    Note to self:
Get a Barbie rig and some of those beer cap lures.
Just to be on the safe side.

  2. ed, I’ve had good luck fishing Trout in the Eastern Sierra lakes using a dry fly and a clear plastic bubble 1/2 full of water. Easy to set up and cast, effective and aggravates the fly fishing purists.
I found it unnecessary to get up at dawn, had better luck just before sundown.
I used a Gander Mtn telescoping pack rod and my Dad’s old Mitchell 320.

Don’t fish much any more as my interests and opportunities have changed over the years.
And frankly I am not up to those hikes any more.

  3. Back in the old days, when I was living in Alaska, we were Steelhead fishing on the Anchor River. My buddy is one of those fly fishing purists that thinks he needs to quietly wade into the river without even making a ripple. Anyway, we stake out our area, not many people around, and a guy shows up with his boom box and a tackle box that looks like a suit case and after about 10 minutes of making a commotion on the side, charges into the river right in between us and throws out a Budweiser beer can lure with two treble hooks on it. In about 5 minutes he hooks about a 12 pounder. He put all his crap away and was gone in 20 minutes but it ruined the day for my partner. We laugh about it now, but he wasn’t laughing then.

  4. “Avery crushes huge bass on barbie pole! ”

The over exaggeration in the title ruins the story for me. It’s a 3 1/2 pound bass. I give the guy credit for getting his kid out on the water and the story is cute enough to stand on it’s own merit with out trying to make it sound like it’s the new 24 pound world record large mouth.

  5. I’ve caught plenty of fish and that video had me until the shot of the fish laying alongside the boat like a harpooned whale and then daddy easily grabbing it from the water, with one hand, by its mouth, while holding a camera steady? Fake.

  6. OMG is that not the CUTEST thing ever!!! I share in her excitement and joy. It reminds me of MY first Fish(not a sunfish either!) . I was 4 y/o, and had a bamboo pole. I carried the fish in a bucket, all the way back to show my Grandpa. In those days you could go to the neighborhood pond by yourself without being abducted or attacked by Pervs.

  7. My daughter still talks about catching the “grandpa fish.” The largest rainbow we caught all weekend on opening day three years ago. A twenty incher. Earlier this month she and went out and shot her first elk. OK I shot it, but she was with me. She will be seven in November and says all the boys want to hear about it at school, but none of the girls do.

My buddy went back the next evening after work and backtrack where we had been set up and fetch home her Hoochie Mama elk caller and her binocular case. I still have a bull elk tag and irrespective of whether I fill it or not, that cow was the highlight of my year for this year.

  8. It is better than a world record to a guy like me who would take a 3-1/2 lb largemouth by one of my kids over a record book fish by me.

I have seen enough fathers who don’t involve their kids to last me a lifetime. This is special.
