CA Gov. Abandons Rooftop Solar, Favors Big Utilities

WUWT: California has stunned green advocates, by excluding rooftop solar from their renewable energy mandate.

According to the LA Times;

California’s aggressive push to increase renewable energy production comes with a catch for people with solar panels on the roof: You don’t count.

If a home or business has a rooftop solar system, most of the wattage isn’t included in the ambitious requirement to generate half of the state’s electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind by 2030, part of legislation signed in October by Gov. Jerry Brown.

That means rooftop solar owners are missing out on a potentially lucrative subsidy that is paid to utilities and developers of big power projects.  read more

  1. Back in the 70’s when the feds were trying to develop natural gas, the mineral owner would get their share of the federal subsidy.

    When a landowner signs a wind power lease to allow for building of wind towers, the lease specifically exempts the landowner from receiving any of the federal subsidies.

  2. The problem here is the “mandate” portion of the show. Because the Kallyfornea Legislature can’t mandate home owners put solar panels on their roof, there is no support for giving away more money, yet.

    One thing is for sure though, there is a dedicated State bureaucracy in place, busy spending millions looking for new Progressive solutions….

  3. Solar energy is one of those ideas that is so good that nobody will do it unless forced to or handsomely reimbursed.
    The state is already heavily subsidizing home solar systems by forcing the utilities to pay retail for the power they generate. It is true that increasing the subsidy would lead to more people embracing the suck that is solar, but the grid problems these panels are causing is already putting the electrical infrastructure at significant risk.
    The utilities, on the other hand, live at the mercy of the government and have no choice other than to go along with any cockamamie idiocy excreted from Sacramento.
