What to Do in an Active Shooter Situation – IOTW Report

What to Do in an Active Shooter Situation

This is a great post. Most of it is just plain common sense, but somehow, it needs to be read anyway.

Lots of it I do out of habit, like being hyper aware of exits, especially in crowded places or really large places, like malls. And when I’m bored at a function, or a place like a bank, I think about what I would do in an active shooter situation (no, seriously, I do.) I think about which chair I would pick up and throw through a window to gain exit (and wonder if the glass would even break if I tried), or I wonder which doors lead to back exits that the public might not be aware of. Stuff like that.

  1. From my favorite Tactical Trainers Web Page:

I have gotten a bunch of emails about the possibility of new courses like “active shooter” or “counter-terrorist” material.
So…How do you stop a terrorist or extreme criminal in their tracks?

Answer: SHOOT THEM IN THE FACE!!

Self-defense is not about taking a complex Close Quarters Battle or Active Shooter course, it’s about taking responsibility for your own survival and then following steps to develop self-defense skills.

No one else is responsible for you and your loved ones, but you.

If you really want to be safer then choose not to be a victim, and… DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Please don’t wait until it is too late. If you are not actively training to defend yourself and others, start NOW!

  2. We started practicing this situation in the late 80’s. At our gun range.
We had security experts teach a class for $100 each person.
It’s amazing what you think you should do. But you should’nt.
my theory was shoot everyone and let god sort it out.

  3. The flight that crashed in PA had an Israeli commando in first class I think. He took on a hijacker and was killed with a box cutter.
Take pelvis shots and when they fall execute them with another to the head and move on. I think most Americans relish the chance to engage this enemy. If you see a team move in, shoot first.

  4. Active Shooter. OK. I’m dead. Anything I do past recognition of the situation is a plus. And being the complete asshole I am, I’m going to ruin their day. I’m gonna’ shriek like a banshee. While I’m running straight at them.

They showed up to shoot sheep.

I am not sheep. I’m armed.

Best plan is to buffalo them to the floor and put one between their eyes. While I sit on their chest.

Worst case, I bite out their carotid with my teeth. But I’m gonna’ launch like a Pit Bull on meth if I think I have an active shooter. Otherwise I die, people around me die, and that just ain’t fuckin’ acceptable.

I’ll be damned if I let these muslim assholes have the last word.

  5. It’s a trick question. Once the Obama the Merciless turns the entire country into a dictatorial gun free zone, there will never be an Active Shooter Situation.

Just like in the Inland Regional Center, in San Bernardino, California. It is a gun free zone, therefore no such event could ever take place there.

    Right?

  6. All very good advice. What I see as a common characteristic of most muslim murderers in the U.S. is they are amateurs — and I mean that. They are people who had a little training or read some manuals or watched some videos and then armed themselves to the teeth. It would seem to me that because they’ve had no live experience doing their deed — this is their first (and probably last) time — a prepared prey may be just about on equal footing. I would also think that an armed predator would find themselves in pretty much the same situation as prey in that they would be just as surprised by someone taking an offensive action against them. Suddenly, then, they are the ones who needs to run, hide or fight. It really does come down to seconds.

The problem, however, is that there does seem to be some other things muslim shooters do beforehand like take drugs to enhance their single-mindedness and reduce their error-causing stress levels or give them a sense of omnipotence.

That’s why Tactical Orgs don’t train Center Mass anymore. They train CNS (Central Nervous System). The width of your eyes and 18 inch down. You shoot one of these clowns in the abdomen and he will take 15 minutes to die and can kill you easily in that amount of time. He’s down, no longer a threat. So legally you can’t shoot him until he goes for his gun, or squeezes the remote to his explosive vest.

  8. I highly recommend reading 100 Deadly Skills.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/147679605X/

Everything from how to escape from handcuffs or duct tape to how to make body armor from easily obtained common items. And a hell of a lot more. The book was written by Clint Emerson, Navy Seal Ret.

I knew most of the stuff in the book just from studying that kind of thing all my life. Didn’t know the proper way to dispose of a body until I read it, though. lol (Hope that never comes in handy). But I did make a few changes after reading the book. I now carry a couple extra items on a regular basis and have ordered a couple more items that fit in the wallet. Good book, worth 100 times the price, could save your life.

  9. Thanks for posting. Very useful information.
You do what you train so we have ‘intruder in the house’ drills here at home. Other practice we set up in a friend’s field with props. If the time comes I want a lot of my response to be automatic. Training helps keep the ‘tunnel vision’ away.
I agree about head shots simply because body armor is easy to get. Also the pelvic shots where the body armor may begin and end. Due to the blood supply in that area pelvic shots are usually deadly on women. Lots f bleeding out.

Carry 2 guns if possible – holster, cross body purse, ankle, pocket. Husband and I decided we are ignoring the no guns allowed signs. Screw it. Most signs are not ‘legal’ meaning they aren’t posted correctly or are too small.. Oops sorry didn’t see it. Here the most they can do is tell you to leave. If nailed by the cops it’s a misdemeanor. Better to be judged by nine than carried by six.

  10. You’re welcome Eugenia. That book was the first thing I ever bought online with a card. Paid cash for the card, ordered the book a couple weeks before it came out.

I’ll be looking at that ‘Left of Bang’ book next. 🙂

  11. This message was sent out last night by my local PD:

In light of recent events, the Xxxxxxxx Police Department has two important reminders… “If you See Something, Say Something!” And if you find yourself in an active shooter event, Run, Hide, Fight!” Let’s be safe and take care of each other!

  12. If you can’t neutralize the threat with the first bullet, keep shooting until the threat IS neutralized.

The San Bernardino shooters were sprayed with over 300 bullets. Go LEO!

  13. Mindset & Brad is correct, CNS. Remember the No. Hollywood bank robbery radio traffic, “They’re wearing body armor! Head shots, head shots!”

  14. Thank you for posting this.

I already do not sit with my back to any door. I do look for exits. I am always looking around me when walking anywhere. I tell my children to always be aware of their surroundings and they just roll their eyes. I do not know how to get through to them. Even before the threat of terrorists, there are just bad people who want to hurt others……rapists, murderers, robbers who will kill, etc. I tell my kids this all the time, now we have to worry about terrorists among us.
