On California “legal” AR-15s, you cannot push the mag release with your finger. It is inset in the receiver, so you have to use a pointed object to push the release(aka. bullet button).

California’s definition of an assault weapon is basically Pistol Grip with detachable mag. They’ve defined a bullet button as not a “detachable Mag”. (crazy fing people) So if you remove the bullet button and replace it with a normal mag release button it is now by Cali definition an assault weapon. But assault weapons are not necessarily Automatic weapons. And there’s nothing you can do to a mag catch to make the gun a select fire weapon. Now this dumb coXX suckers got every lib that listened to this believing any AR can easily be modified into an evil killing machine. Which they cant. And they weren’t. If I did my job that poorly I’d quit.

Which is odd, because you can also manipulate the front sight and receiver pins with, of all things, a bullet. Yet nobody calls them a bullet sight or bullet receiver.
What a complete asshole-full auto weapons are illegal without a permit and a ton of paperwork from the ATF. And ones manufactured post 1986 aren’t available at all expect to dealers and cops. I think that’s the year.
That makes the ones out there outlandishly expensive because all you’re doing is trading around old machine guns-for example an AR 15 semi goes for ~$600 and up. A full auto AR 15 goes for, and I’m not an expert on this, around $15,000! and up. Just for a couple slight changes.
Now I have seen a trigger mod that uses the recoil bump to make a semi fire almost as fast as a full auto and that’s pretty cool but I’ve never tried one and have no idea if they are reliable. But there is no “button” you can push on a legal semi AR that will switch it over to full auto. A legal semi AR is lacking a couple components in the receiver and bolt carrier group that make that impossible(and possibly more, again, I’m not an expert)
And not that it matters to criminals but if you get caught with an unpermitted machine gun, you are going to get a major fucking.
It takes a little practice but you can hook a thumb in a belt loop and use it to harness the recoil bump. The weapon recoil moves the weapon back but your belt loop anchors your hand, a little bit of forward pressure in the front grip, a vertical grip turned sideways works best.
Sadly, I only know this because somebody told me, all my weapons were lost in a tragic boating accident.

A bullet button does not turn a semi-automatic into a fully-automatic. It does not change the bullet capacity of the gun. It hinders/slows the operators progress when releasing an empty magazine. That is all.
