  1. Oh,how that image represents the Christmas memory of my youth, real or imagined.

Today, being home alone for the first time in 42 years without Mrs.Mxyzptlk, I was surprised when the doorbell rang and it was a young lady from down the street who I say hello to when I see her out walking her two little dogs. I don’t know the family other than that, but I guess her family heard I was alone and she invited me to have Christmas Eve dinner with them. I demurred, having a pot roast of my own in the oven. But she had brought me a nice plate of homemade Christmas cookies. Made my day.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

  2. Stories like that are about the only reason I don’t outright despise humanity these days (my dad and I have a very nice lady that drops off home baked goodies at Christmas as well). There are still good people that care about others and those people are why we have to keep fighting for what is good and right. Merry Christmas Mr. M.

  3. Oh it’s nice to hear that there are nice folks who will stop by with a sincere ‘hello-how are you…’ Enjoy your pot roast Mr. M. I have a cranberry pork loin in the crock pot right now myself. ?

  4. Here’s to the 40+ years in the past when you were blessed to have your beautiful wife with you at Christmas! May the memory of those times comfort you during this difficult Holiday season, and bring you peace.

All the best, now and in the future.

    Merry Christmas to you.

  5. A true food story for you, illustr8r. 41-1/2 years ago Mrs. M made something called Tuna Foo Young. It was as horrible as it sounds. I believe it was planned that way. I have been doing all the cooking and baking and of course, food shopping ever since. So, good eats isn’t a problem for me. I make my own breads and sauces. but now leftovers last for more days. Your pork loin sounds good!

  6. Dear Santa:

Please bring me some cooking lessons for Christmas. I have been married 20+ years and Mr. Mxyzptlk’s skills are putting me to shame. However, may I also say that Mrs. M was a genius 😉

Merry Christmas Mr. Mxyzptlk and to all who read here. Mr. M, you should share some of your homemade goods with the lovely lady who invited you to dinner. I’ll bet she would love it!! I know I would.

  7. I am also alone for the holidays now. I have no relatives in the immediate vicinity. There are a few first cousins in northern New Jersey and Long Island, but I have no interest in getting there via public transit, which would involve multiple connections on holiday schedules.

To take my mind off being alone and to give the day proper recognition, I always prepare a special, extra-fancy meal. Today’s menu:

    –Manhattan Clam Chowder
–Salad of Lightly Steamed String Beans, Red Peppers, and Plum Tomatoes in Balsamic Vinaigrette
    –Roast Beef au Jus
    –Pan-Roasted Potatoes
    –Asparagus with Hollandaise Sauce
    –Croissant Rolls
–Vanilla Pudding with Mandarin Orange Segments

Everything made from scratch. Merrrrrry Chriiiiiistmas!

  8. If I could get you to the Midwest this morning, I would pay your way just to have you show me how to make this. YUM!!

Enjoy and know that a family of five in flyover country is eating a from-frozen Christmas meal cause mom can’t cook. It’ll taste ok, but nothing like yours.
