Court dismisses attempt to force Catholic hospitals to provide abortions

WT: Calling the challenge “dubious,” a federal court Monday threw out a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union that sought to force a Catholic hospital system to provide abortions against the church’s teachings.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Southern Division, said the ACLU did not have standing to sue Trinity Health Corporation, which operates 86 facilities in 21 states.

Kevin Theriot, senior counsel for the Alliance Defending Freedom, which intervened in the case on Trinity’s side, said the government cannot coerce medical personnel to violate their religion by providing abortions.  MORE

  1. I tell you what. . . . the church run hospital shouldn’t be forced to perform abortions (a good thing), but I’LL be willing to perform late-term post-birth abortions . . . on ACLU members and their corporate donors. Step right up, no waiting. Do you want it quick and (relatively) painless, or low and slow. Your choice, we aim to please, just so long as it rids the US of another libelous spouting Libtard.

  2. It’s not a great ruling for Pro-Life movement. If I read it correctly the court simply ruled that the ACLU had no standing on the issue/case therefore couldn’t bring the case. It said nothing about the law forcing a group to take action against their religious beliefs and violating their first amendment protections (at least I think it’s the first). I agree with some of the other commenters that the defendants should explore their options with regards to suing the ACLU for bringing a lawsuit meant to intimidate.

  3. JohnS – More accurately, the ACLU was founded by leftists as a means to defend Communists.

Since then, the ACLU has metastisized like a cancer to defend just about any sick, bizarre issue so long as it destroys America.
