360º view from the deck of the U.S.S. Constitution

The U.S.S. Constitution, built in 1797, is still in active duty. In fact, it is the only current active duty ship to have sunk an enemy vessel.

You can stand on the deck HERE.

Read about ‘Old Ironsides’ (nicknamed because cannonballs would bounce off it’s hardened oak hull) HERE.

  1. I’ve been on it, it’s pretty damn cool-there’s a museum nearby too that’s crammed full of navel artifacts. Boston is so beautiful and there’s so much history to touch there that I couldn’t recommend it any higher to spend 2 or 3 days-I guarantee you you will not have a moment’s rest. Plus the food, oh lord.

For me there’s also Trinity Church which is full of Lafarge and Tiffany windows, absolutely phenomenal work.

  2. When hurricane Hugo hit Charleston a LOT of old, and I mean old, live oak trees were destroyed.
The ribs of Ol’ Ironsides were made of the same arching limbs.
Not having to steam bend the wood makes a much stronger rib.
A historical naval architect I know went to Charleston and marked trees for the Connie.
They now have historically accurate replacements.
Who says God isn’t on our side?
