On Thin Artic Sea Ice – IOTW Report

On Thin Artic Sea Ice

In order to demonstrate to all the world that Artic Sea ice has declined significantly, some dumb asses from the UK (with a Russian Captain) are attempting to “circumnavigate the North pole counterclockwise” in a sailing yacht named Northabout.

Calling their venture “The Polar Ocean Challenge,” they managed to make the first leg of their trip, from Bristol to Murmansk, Russia and then proceeded to get ice bound. But I am happy to report this morning that, according to their website, they have managed to make it out of harbor and are now attempting to sail East around Russia.

Good Luck, lunatics.

Unless they’re going to drag their yacht across the ice, they’re not going to finish the next leg of the journey.  It’ll be interesting to check in on these guys in a week or so.

  1. “What kind of drink is that?”
“Hello, do you come here often?”
    “So – what’s your sign?”

(I just thought those guys could use some good icebreakers, and those have always worked well for me.

    😛

  2. Ice melts in the summer, that’s why the voyage is now. Consider also more trade takes place over the decades as the world economy grows along the northern route during summer. More traffic = more ice breaking = faster melting. The ice cover is damn near the same as it was 50 years ago in the dead of winter according to their charts.

  3. Did they never read Shackleton’s writings? Amazing how innocently dumb some people are.
If you haven’t read SOUTH by Shackleton, do please so. Wonderful!
It will give you an idea what these boys are up against.

  4. I live in the desert south west and that picture alone made me want to put on some socks.
The ‘research’ money must be nice for them to go out and risk their lives for nothing.

  5. Seems to me the Soviets tried that in the 1930s with a ship full of slave labor heading for the gulag. They were stuck for months and robably had to eat the dead. Didn’t bother NKVD much.
