Hate to be a wet blanket… but…

The PGA tour is going gaga over Jim Furyk’s score today. He shot a 58 in the Traveler’s Championship.

It is an amazing number, for sure, but they are acting as if he’s shot the best round of golf in PGA history. He hasn’t. *He shot a 58, 12 under on a par 70 course.

Al Geiberger, Chip Beck and David Duval have all shot a 13 under 59 on par 72 courses, the 59 being a better score in relation to par than the 58. 58 sounds better, because in golf, lower is better, but in reality it’s one shot short of all the golfers mentioned above.

Annika Sorenstam also shot a 59 on the LPGA tour, but that was on a par 70 course, and everyone makes a point of saying that when they mention her score. So, I’m here to point out, like the other wet blankets, that Furyk’s score is artificially “record setting,” like Sorenstam’s.

*The idea behind golf is going as low as you can in relation to par. 13 under is better than 12 under, and when you factor it that way, the correct way, the par of the course doesn’t matter any longer and Furyk’s score is only historic in that you get to write a 58.

  1. I like getting on a par 70 course, it gives me a better chance for a good score. 58 is certainly out of the question, 68 is as well. Hell now that I think about it 78 is damn difficult. 58 is probably a pretty good score, but 13 under is better than 12 under so I guess BFH has a point.

  2. Furyk is the only golfer in history to shoot TWO sub 60 rounds in PGA tour competition. He shot a 59 at the BMW Championship in 2013.

There have been well over a million rounds of golf by all the greatest golfers in the world including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead…you get the idea.

    It’s a pretty big deal even though it’s on a par 70.

  3. And the arguments continue….I believe Bart Starr might be the greatest quarterback in NFL history….and why is that you ask?….he won 5 NFL championships in a decade. No one else has done that…..Then we can go to baseball….I love baseball and the stats will make you plum crazy….Who’s buying the next beer?…

  4. 58 is one more than all the States Oblama visited.
BFH is not raining on Jim’s parade, he is trying to educate assholes.
I had the great privilege of meeting Al Geiberger some years age at the Senior Open in New Jersey. “Mr.59” I told him that his instructional video knocked 4 strokes off my game. He was delighted. When I told him that the Pro. at my home course was Marty
Bohen, he almost did cartwheels. He played with Marty, Dave Stockdale, and many other old timers. He gave me a signed photo of
Mr.59 to give to Marty. Which I did. Great memories. Marty is now in Port St. Lucie. Also have a golf hat signed by Jim Furyk, Pat Harrington, and Mark Calcaveccia from the Hondo Classic, Florida, years ago. Yeah, I am a hoppy golfer. Well done Jim.

  5. Exactly right. Some guy was giving me shit on Twitter.
I’m not shitting on Furyk. It’s an amazing score.
But because of the way they are framing it people will think it’s the best round by a PGA golfer in history.
    It’s not.
The 59s were better because the idea of golf is to be as low as possible against par. Furyk didn’t do that.

Moe. I played 9 with you where you shot 39.
    I distinctly remember it.
I remember you actually shouting at your ball in flight because you were so happy about how you were striking it.

  6. I once shot a 38 on the front for my best score, back 9 shot a 60. For my typical high 90s average. Amazing how that shit goes down. The wheels never stay on for long.

  7. I can drive a ball 400 plus yards. Unfortunately it’s got a big ass radii to it. And it can go either direction. My best round was at Makena in Ohau. We were on the 7th, and I hit a hole in one on the 8th. Boy were the guys playing the 8th impressed. So I didn’t count all those petty strokes on the 7th. Grip it and rip it. Extreme golf. It took me a while to figure out I’m no finess athlete. Jimmies got such a fucked up swing I can’t help but love the guy.
