Ernest Thompson served on the USS Missouri during the war, the sister ship to the USS Iowa, based in San Pedro.
But Thompson’s in his 90’s now, and hasn’t been able to visit the ship recently, so a group of Navy Chief Selects, brought the navy to him, singing “Anchors aweigh” in the middle of his residential street.
They then walked up and shook Thompson’s hand.
Makes my heart sing!
Tremendously nice! Thats our America! Thanking all for your selfless service.
“All this for (a flag) an old Navy veteran?”
DAMN SKIPPY!
Man, that is refreshing. Obama has failed to completely decimate the military. God Bless each of those young people and all of our military.
Ok. Now I can’t see so well again. Doc said it wasn’t allergy related so nothing to take for it.
Stop watching things like this is all he suggested. Useless Doc.
I can’t think of anything that makes me prouder than our military, flag and anthem.
I can’t think of anything that makes me angrier than anyone who desecrates them.
Sad to say, and a fine point to be sure, but IOWA isn’t based anywhere. She was decommed in 1990 and is sitting at a pier in San pedro, CA as a museum. I’d just as soon have her out shaking the “Big Stick” at some baddies, but alas, she is too old, too obsolescent and too expensive to keep commissioned. And Rosie, nice sentiments, fine words and a “like” just doesn’t seem to cut it. I’m not sure about you guys but I suspect we all have an Ernie – a grandfather, father, uncle, brother, dear friend – we see standing there, many out on that long, long patrol up topside. I am particularly sad and wistful watching this as it appears we are on the verge of losing something for which many have paid so dearly for so long.
Excellent! When I Made Chief Petty Officer in 2002, WE would do the same things…keep going my soon-to-be fellow Brothers…Fair Winds and Following Seas, Anchors Aweigh!!!
