In my part of the world, bear hunters have always used dogs to track bears. They spend a lot of money breeding, caring for, training and tracking their animals. This season alone wolves have killed and eaten 40 of these dogs in a select few counties and the DNR is puzzled by the high number.

I’m posting this for the stupid comments on the original article from all those who don’t live here and don’t know what they’re talking about.
The bears hire the wolves.
Just like the spotted owl.
Now they hire guys to kill the brown owl, who are out-competing the spotted owl. After they ruined the logging industry, so they could save said spotted owl.
Its called the sphere of influence. Wolves have territories, but they are fluid, and change with environmental changes (like an extremely cold winter) and so their ‘sphere of influence’ is actually larger than their observed territory.
Same with a rancher.
His sphere of influence grows the more pissed he is about losing livestock in his area to a predatory animal the government tells him how, when, he can shoot.
If these environmentalists were serious about species preservation they would gather as much DNA as possible for future environmentalists, the same way archeologists put off digging at difficult sites until technology provides a way forward.
And allow Ranchers to operate on their own land the way they see fit.
Wolves are territorial and they hate dogs. My brother in law lost a couple hunting dogs to wolves in Michigan. Now he hunts wolves.
Fuck. I’ll sicc a pack of feral Weiner Dogs on those damned wolves. They’ll dart underneath and rip their nuts off.

I had nightmares about wolves attacking my dog. That is some scary stuff I read before bedtime. That area in Wisconsin is a distance but we’ve been getting black bear in my territory hanging in people’s yards and eating at their bird feeders. Now I know why.
Why can’t they all just get along?
